Ben Stokes “Durham > England”

I think that’s a little bit cliched. Indeed considering the decline of cricket and state schools and the preponderance of public school boys in the first class game, that four of the last six permanent England skippers (Vaughan, Flintoff, Root and Stokes) do not fall into that category suggests you’re about two decades out of date.

The tweet is very much in keeping with Stoke’s character and style of leadership, and I don’t particularly have a problem with it, but it’s not about class for me.

What a bizarre response. I made no mention of schools - but since you brought it up, Joe Root got a scholarship to a public school.

The Stokes outburst does him little credit although it was understandably probably born out of frustration at yet another injury. He doesn't realise or appears to be prepared to accept that,in what is now the twilight of his career, he needs to ease his workload, particularly the bowling.

34 in a few months, maybe his career is nearing the end due to same injuries

Ok fair enough to a point. You referred to posh boys. I don’t really know what the definition of posh boys is these days. But Stokes’s background is that of the child of a professional sportsman who was sufficiently elite at his game to get a job in a foreign country on the other side of the world. It’s not exactly working class hero shit is it? He’s not a potty mouth because his dad went down the pit.

I never quite understand some of the criticism that comes Stokes way.

He is the ultimate competitor who gives his all every time he puts on a England shirt.

He has given us to of two of the best memories ever for England, the World Cup win in 2019 and that unbelievable innings to win an Ashes test match at Leeds later that year.

Played another match winning innings to see us to a World Cup T20 win and has changed the fortunes of the England test team since he took over to a fantastic brand of entertaining cricket and created a group that has a fantastic team culture and bond.

He like a lot of cricketers will be respected more when he retirees.

The only criticism I ever had of him was that fighting in the street in Bristol and on reflection I was probably wrong having a go at him then!

Brilliant bloke, captain and Leader!!

Tall poppy syndrome.

Because sport is fickle and sports fans are fickle.

What someone did 2-5 years ago is largely irrelevant. Your only as a good as your last performance.

Stokes had a bad 2024 so that's what a lot of people will react to.

In a way his injury is good timing as he can avoid the pointless T20 tournaments and get fit for the tests in the summer.
