Only thing I can think of is that we owed his agent a favour.

Pretty clear to most at the time that he'd not been training or keeping himself to a reasonable standard of fitness to earn a contract somewhere, which should have been enough to get some alarm bells ringing.

Given his injuries and the time it took the likes of Mundle to settle in etc., I will give him the benefit of the doubt.

My main concern is his seemingly poor injury record.

He was back in training (and made the bench for the Blackburn game), but ahead of the Stoke game he apparently felt some tightness in his hamstring so they decided to take him out of training for 2 weeks to let it settle down.
Based on those timelines you'd expect him to be back in training end of this week, or more likely start of next.

He has not played any competitive minutes since the 2-0 win over Derby County on October 1st, but returned to the matchday squad for the 2-1 win over Norwich City. Despite that, he was again absent at the weekend as the Black Cats fell to a late defeat at Stoke City. Le Bris says there has been a small reaction following his return to full training, and that Sunderland are going to give him more time to ensure that the injury is fully healed.
