Do you mean the old webbing ex-army surplus havasacks that everyone used to have? The blue one's would be surplus RAF and the more common khaki ones were of course Army surplus. Being a bit of a hippy about town I used to favour an army surplus gasmask shoulder bagI think in the 70s, 80s heavy industry was on the decline. Even though there was still a lot of work there didnt seem to be a lot of money. Lads would walk up or maybe on a bike from the yards down at Pallion, didnt seem to be many cars. Flat caps and those blue bags that had their "bait" lunch in them.
I think that most of the ex British military surplus stuff from the 40's and 50's had been sold off by the late 1970's. I did hear recently though that there is supposed to be a warehouse that's filled with unused WWI trench periscopes but I don't know how true that is
