Cricketers unfairly maligned

Agree but what I was meaning was that Tate is forever known as the 'Man Who Lost The Ashes' when he played his one and only Test at Old Trafford in 1902 and he dropped a chance on the boundary and then with 8 runs required for victory he came in at No.11 to join Wilfred Rhodes. Tate edged his first ball for four but was then clean bowled and the series was lost. He never played again for England despite having taken 1331 FC wickets with 109 5fers and 10 wickets 29 times - slightly more impressive figures than Josh Hull.

I know I know...I shouldnt be spending my time reading all those cricket books!
Don't be daft, it's fantastic to hear both some of the personal anecdotes and archaic knowledge you have to share 😁

Ollie Robinson (the bowler)

End of thread

Averages 22.9 for England and was getting pelters in a series where he averaged under 30 in Australia.

In our last 2 biggest series. Aussies home and India away, he’s broken down twice in a 4 man attack (stokes with bad knee), meaning we’ve been left with 3 bowlers for over 2 days.

You can’t pick players like that.

He looks in better shape now, he looked a Sarnie short of Fat for a while, Maybe ditching his fiance just before their wedding and hooking up with an instagram influencer has done him good

He’s been in better shape for over a year. Before the India series he got fit

Not accusing him of being unfit actually just like his body struggles with 5 day test cricket, it’s unfortunate

But like at key points in series you can’t be a bowler down

this is why i think were taking a huge risk seemingly putting all our eggs in one basket to get Archer fit for Australia

Stokes and Wood break down more than the Jolly Bus but don't get blamed for it like Robinson.

If he bowled 90mph we would "have to manage him better".

Told yers it was the top answer like.

not in games like. You can’t pick someone who cant get through a test match

Absolute vital matches against the Aussies and India be couldn’t bowl

Never been the ashes before that in Australia he was bowling off spin

He batted 2 hours in the searing heat in Ranchi before being asked to bowl and breaking down with a back spasm.

And then got pelters from fans and pundits for not being fit enough.

Fair enough, don't pick him if he isn't fit enough for the role you need him to do, but the amount of stick he gets for it is absurd.

I’m not criticizing him like, he’s tried to get fit and is fit, Said that numerous times like, look at back.

My point is just whatever reason, maybe it’s just the way his built, he breaks down during test matches. You can get away with it v West Indies at home but not in scorching heat in Australia and India.

We don't see behind the scenes though, he's the first player I've seen McCullum publicly criticise after how he went in India.

If the management don't trust him from whatever happens in the background then his previous record is irrelevant.

He's clearly a bit of a divvy. Supposedly that podcast he did with his new lass(left his fiance/child for her) didn't go down well with the setup.

It was the previous regime who slagged him off in the press.

McCullum:

"Everything he did leading into the Test match suggested we'd see not just the Ollie Robinson we'd seen previously but a better version of it.

"For one reason or another it didn't quite work out for him and obviously he's not just as disappointed as everyone else, he's the most disappointed out of everyone. Our job is to make sure we get around him and make sure we give him as much support and confidence to be able to go again when the next time arises. It's just sport right? You have great expectations and sometimes you're not quite able to deliver."

Yep that's the comment I'm on about.

That's a close as we'll get to McCullum throwing a player under the bus.

We won't see him again.
