Sunderland AFC said it expects more than 70% of fans from the other side of the city will travel to the stadium via the bridge.
The club's chief business officer David Bruce said: "It's our version of the Wembley Way where you create that special ritual and tradition for fans.
"It will create an unbelievable visual on match day, when you see those red and white shirts coming en-masse across the water."

Better late than never as the bbc joins the party.

For those that can remember there was some pretty good BBC coverage of a certain footbridge on another river in the NE when it was built, hopefully Sunderland will get the same moving forward.
