Jack Clarke

Probably just to be paid in the following financial year.

That's not generally an 'add on' though. The £15m could be a one off payment, but will likely be structured over a year or two. The 'add on' sounds more like actual add on for something to be met rather than a guaranteed payment, otherwise the fee would just be 20m.

Or Ipswich might stay up, he might have a great time and get an England call up then someone like Villa buys him in 18 month/2 years. It's nowt to do with the fans despite what we wish. The fee seems too low but he wouldn't sign another deal and scarily this window was probably his peak sale value for SAFC. Not a great look for the owners but him and they made the decisions. Lets face it we are a long long shot for automatic promotion and one of about 12 clubs that might get in playoffs and that was with Clarke.
With Clarke, I don't think we were.

He might impress there - who knows. I just feel he'd be more likely to impress in a Sunderland side in the Prem, than going to a new club. He'd play nigh on every minute for us. It's a stable relationship.

It's interesting you mention Villa and England, as there's one player who springs to mind with a similar career path from the Championship - Jack Grealish. He was their main man over 3 seasons in the Championship, and remained their main man when they went up. And after that season, that's when everybody got a really big move.

I get what you're saying regarding peak value this summer, but I think the club's folded far too soon here. And I don't particularly see why only having a year left on his contract next summer would bring his value down significantly - especially if he has another good season.

Only Leeds & Ipswich bid for him this window, not exactly the bidding war we'd of hoped for mind
As a Town fan I’m pretty shocked we’ve got him this low - thought 20m up front would do it but not 15m.

You make an important point though. I see lots of tweets from fans of all clubs stating that their players are worth (insert big fee here) “in this market” but lots of PL clubs are tight against PSR limits. This has had a trickle down effect and spending this summer in the bottom half of the Premier League has been low. That’s the market for top end Championship players so Leeds aside (and they’re a special case with parachute payments and players with PL experience) most clubs have been complaining about fees received because there aren’t the same bidding wars.

Another issue with the Clarke fee is that supply of top-end Championship left wingers this summer was high. Summerville, Rowe and Philogene have all got moves; can’t help but feel this reduced Sunderland’s leverage a bit. Again, 15m is low but in the context of the fees received for the others, 20m was probably the realistic number, rather than any of the more ambitious figures being banded around. Perfect storm of lots of options in Clarke’s position and a slower PL transfer market.

As others have said, selling players is the only way to trade up for non-parachute payment clubs. I hope you get a decent replacement in, which will probably the big factor in whether the Clarke sale ages well or not. I was encouraged by the business this summer, there seemed to be a bit more compromise made on the age of the signings, so it’ll be interesting to see who comes in in the final few days.

Good luck for the rest of the season

I'm a bit disappointed for Jack that he didn't get a premier league club, seems a bit of a sideways move to me. Ian Harte must be a bit shit at his job as he is clearly capable of stepping up imo
Ipswich 0 Liverpool 2 last weekend - have Liverpool been relegated to the championship like?

He has brought in some very good young players and he deserves huge credit for this
However his biggest achiement by a country mile his in his indoctrination of our supporters and turning them into pound shop accountants.
I have watched Sunderland for over 50 years and during all this time the fans main concerns were getting good players and trying to win something..
Only since he took over have a significant proportion of fans starting going on about "sustainability ' and whether we make a profit on players.
Time and again fans excuse the lack of ambition with references to sustainability and claim that other clubs will be in trouble for showing ambition. The job he has done on our fans dwarfs all his other achievements.

So you just give your best player away at a lower price? You then have to replace him with less money, even though he has two years left on his contract?
It’s a tough situation, but given the absence of interest in him from other premier league clubs, it’s either let him go at that number or keep an unhappy player.

He could also tell them he isn't going anywhere.

It's a load of shite man, I can't think of one case where a football club has actively pushed our their current best player against his own wishes.
We've done it several times. Jones, Bent, Henderson, Sessegnon... and now Jack Clarke.

You're talking like we're guaranteed to go up if Clarke had stayed.

 So since the world record transfer was broken back in 1990, a mere 34 years ago with Baggio leaving for Juve, Sunderlands the only club to do it since, There's a surprise. What a club.
That’s just off the top of my head. I doubt we’re pushing him out though. He said his good byes at the end of last season to the fans and don’t begrudge him a shot at the premier league now.

He’s gone need to move on. Speakman needs to get moving on a replacement . Hes killing our club. All us supporters are nowt to him it’s just 💰 that’s all he cares about.
It is not Speakman's fault for us not paying for players this summer.
