Simon Moore compendium thread

Don't mind this signing at all really. Old experienced head to push Patto hopefully better than the terrible Bishop attempted to.

There's no prohibition on bringing experience in on frees. This lad is being brought in to do the same type of job as Scott Carson at Man City; emergency cover.
Aye, its worked for them but in a very different way. Our owners planned vision and way forward for the Club, as established in numerous interviews, Club statements and in recent months via X is totally different to City's or are you suggesting that is not now the case? BTW, I'm all for bringing in experienced players , some at least.

I get the bringing experience in to help cover and then developing others keepers with loans etc. But when Speakman is talking about 'pushing Anthony Patterson daily' although he's maybe worded it cleverly inferring for a first team spot he's clearly not, as at 34 he's played a similar amount of games to Steve Harper and spent much of his career as back up - some of his 280 or so appearances being conference and wessex league.

I'm not against this type of signing at all it and maybe there's going to be an element of coaching to his role, if he's been brought in as a player primarily and Bishop does go, going of his experience and profile on the face of it it looks another cheap option, who has played around two seasons worth of games at our current level. If he's Third choice - I don't particularly care.

surely the vacancy created in the squad is that Bass, not bishop, has gone?

Bass was out on loan anyway last season and Bishop came here having played preseason at Man United and when out on loan prior to that. I'd would imagine Bishop himself expected to play more, so maybe he now wants games be it in loan or a move?

That's the key for me. I don't think having experience around is a bad thing. But we're unsure at the moment of his actual role- is this purely third choice cover with a view to coaching as clubs above us may do, or is it as second choice and there's going to be more movement.

I guess it only really becomes a potential problem if we have injuries there.

Fine as a third choice but strange to see us offer a 2 year contract after taking such a hard line with not offering deals to more experienced players like Batth, Pritchard, Evans and Gooch.

Also not entirely convinced he hasn't been brought in with the view that Patterson may be sold, and he and Bishop fight it out to be first choice.

Experience doesn’t just come with playing regular football though. He’s at an age where he can help younger lads in the squad.

Keepers make a career out of being second choice, which is exactly what he’ll be here.

It just feels like people cutting them more slack for unambitious random signings. When you say experience doesn’t just come with playing do you just mean he’s old as dirt?

What exactly is he going to help the younger lads with? How to get comfy on the bench and not get your hopes up?

he has achieved somehting most of the young keepers at SAFC havent and some nevr will..
Been a first choice in the championship

Positive of this is an experienced pro.negative is I don’t think he’s good enough to be 2nd choice. Not even on the bench for Cov and they aren’t blessed with good keepers.
Hopefully contributes to the overall squad with experience and character.

So many going into a meltdown over a player who in all reality may never get anywhere near a first team appearance but is there if needed.
Not a bad keeper and a positive influence within the club, good luck Simon.
