First cricket match I remember watching

I can’t remember the first game I saw on the tele but I do remember going to Jesmond for an England XI v Rest of the World game.

It must have been the early 90s and I remember my dad pointing out Nasser Hussein who was playing in an Essex cap and jumper

Nasser played for Durham University in the late 80’s . Alongside Martin Speight , Jonathan Longley, James Boiling and Tom O’Gorman ( Derbyshire) who featured in the Combined Universities giant killing Benson & Hedges cup run in the same era

Can't really remember. I used to be fascinated by Test matches on TV even though I initially had no idea what was going on. There always seemed to be something quite civilised about cricket.

Aye I read his book so knew he played for Durham Uni.

Im sure at the time he must have just played for England and done well for my dad to point him out. He fielded next to the boundary and was always stood quite near to where we were sitting (depending on the over).

Another standout game (but not the first game I saw) was Mark Ramprakash’s debut. Genuinely thought we had an absolute superstar. Had to wait for KP for anyone to live up to that hype

Can remember watching the 2005 ashes series, must have been school holidays. Remember going to the shops on a morning and getting some drinks and sweets. Then sitting all day watching

Might have watched games before but thats the first I can remember, I had just started playing cricket too the year before

I was at that game 👍 and also recall that same summer when a mass invasion of Greenfly stopped play during a John Player League game between Yorkshire and Middlesex
I was there at the greenfly game. Dad used to take me to John Player League games at Scarborough and Middlesbrough. Remember the seats at Middlesbrough were concrete slabs. Saw one game there I think against Somerset but Richards wasn’t playing so it must have been 80 or 84 and Somerset got a big score and Yorkshire chased them down with Graham Stevenson hitting 10 sixes. Unheard of in those days. Would be great if we could have a competition like that running through the summer today.

The 1976 Windies tour when Holding bowled at the speed of light on a flat Oval pitch is my first memory of watching on telly.

University Ground, Durham v Leicestershire in the AXA Equity & Law League, it must have been 1992 because both Jones and Botham played for Durham. As I recall, Leicestershire had a violent yellowy-green kit.

Have you a chief witness to prove your attendance at the said game 😀🛖
Sadly my chief witness died in 2011 but I remember a good stand between Glendenen and Fothergill (with his red straps on his pads) then Justin Benson did some big hitting for Leics before they fell short. Daftest thing was that the County Championship game was being played at the Racecourse and they had to up sticks and play at Gateshead Fell on the Sunday and return to Durham on the Monday.

1992 was the last season the teams played the Sunday League in whites as well.

Was a guest of DCCC at the game with a free lunch box as I lent them the orange/brown tip up seats for the early games in 92/94 before the move to the Riverside

My mam used to do teas at DAwdon - 100 years ago - so I was up there watching from 5 or 6. I was 13 when I went to Headingley by myself, by coach, to see the West Indies 1966. I saw Sobers bat and he got 174 and seymour Nourse who hit 130? I watched Charlie Griffiths and Wes Hall bowl.

I probs saw others earlier, but when I saw this thread and sat and thought, one of the earliest specific memories is Atherton getting run out in the 1993 Ashes.

I'd have been 5 I think and at my Grandad's

Would that have been on BBC?

I've sat in the Hall & Griffiths stand at Kensington Oval. Which is right next to the Sobers pavilion. There's no stand or owt named after Nurse (another Bajan). They've ran out of stands which to name after people, so the ones they've got are named after two and even three players (3 W's). Amazing such a small island has produced so many brilliant players.
