Went to Alykes a few years back. Was very nice. Only half the resort was open so quieter than usual, and that suited us.

The main criteria are that it has to be picturesque, near the water and have plenty of decent tavernas / restaurants where we can sit preferably by a lovely harbour or somesuch and relax with nice local seafood etc. But no thumping house beats from local bars, no cheesy cafes advertising a full bloody english for 5 euros, don't want it to be too built up, and so on. Think Malcesine on Lake Garda but shifted to Greece. Any ideas based on good experiences, anyone?

Just back from a week in Agios Gordios, really liked it, booked late as were going to scotland up untill a week before but cancelled as the uk weather was looking depressing. Some really nice restaurants on the front. Weve previously stayed up the coast in Paleokastritsa, Arrilas and Aghios Stefanos, all fairly quiet and chilled. Of to kefalonia in september as we have for last 2 years, love it.

Been to Perissa twice (just over the mountain from Kamari). Can get a five min boat to each place. Bus from Perissa to Fira, have a look around and watch the lardy arsed Yanks on donkeys struggling to get up the cobbled bank.Then go to Oia for the sunset. Check out the photo everyone has seen of the blue domed church and the sea behind it. Most people don't realise that its a tiny little walkway where you take a photo and there are thousands there each night trying to get that one shot.

Nice place. Theres a bar upstairs opposite the Pacifico or whatever its called (used to have a really old scotty dog) and the pub did a quiz. For some reason they had one of those hats that looks like a roast chicken on the bar. My lass decided to put it on and took a picture. Some of her work mates have been to the same bar and worn the same hat. So whenever we or they go away, everyone tries to find a chicken hat in a shop to get a photo.

Im actually in Kos now, and it is baking. If I was the OP I’d maybe come out in September.

As for Kos then it is a toss up between Kos Town and Tingaki for me, but I think the variety of Kos town just wins it for me.

We went on a boat trip to see the sunset.

You go to this active volcano first and walk about on it. It just smelt of sulphur.

There was unlimited wine on the boat and it genuinely was unlimited. We got so hammered talking to this couple we missed the sunset!

If you want a nice sunset view with your scran and don’t fancy heading up to Zia, take a look at Lofaki restaurant just outside of Kos Town
