Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

Ii dont know why but I thought it was going to be closer to the existing bridges.

I know there's projected plans for another footbridgr from Gallys Gill but looking at That image the footbridge would be better river level between where the Saltgrass is and the houses beneath the Stadium

It's only going to be 10m (30ft) wide? I thought it would be wider than that to be honest.

The crowds going across Wearmouth Bridge after the match barely have 10m width to play with on that bridge even allowing for them closing a couple of lanes to traffic, and that can be slow going at times.

10m is a lot wider than the footpath and the 1 lane they close on the bridge after a match. There'll also still be plenty who use Wearmouth bridge who are heading to other areas so will be more than adequate.

I forgot I took a photo when I walked over last week. Took one earlier when I was walking over earlier. You can see it's slowly getting there, it's also something to show the people who believe there's no funding for the bridge and work has stopped

I remember years ago the artist L S Lowery did a documentary about his holidays in Sunderland. He stopped on the Wearmouth Bridge and pointed out how the arches of the railway brige picture framend the view. It was then of the power station in Pallion. Geat minds

In the early 1970's me and me mates often used to see Lowery sitting in the corner of the little tea room that was at the top of the main staircase in the Museum. He was just like any OAP sitting by himslef in his rain mac with his pot of tea. Aggie the tea lady use to reckon that he came in to check that the gallery still had the paintings that he had given the town on display.

The low level bridge to connect Riverside Park and Sheepfolds is planned for later on in the development.

It will be an absolutely fantastic addition to the city but unfortunately for me I have a real fear of heights, so I will probably shit myself if I ever used it.

it really will be a game changer for home games and concerts at the SoL. the pubs and restaurants in the town centre must be over the moon

hopefully we can get more stuff at the SoL like womens games, the rugby, internationals, exhibitions, things like the durham county cup and reserve games etc..

be class if they had an all day music festival on at the SoL with big bands on all day, people could just mooch over the town for a few pints, back and forth

it'll also help with match day car traffic too, you'd think, as they won't have to put them lane closures on any more

The advantages of it are almost limitless, in years to come we will probably realise we couldn't have done without it.

Especially with the dawdlers trudging along 4 abreast chatting away to each other not giving a flying fuck about faster walking people behind them wanting to be past.

I think that they will continue with that one mind.
Not everyone will use that footbridge to go back into the town.
I certainly won't - as it's not in the direction I go after the match. 🤷‍♂️
