The Athletic: Brentford want Jobe

I think some people forget that he looked good at the start of the season. He trailed off, but he played a lot, and as a team we were guff.

I thought he was bang average early on as we started with two number 8s and lacked width as a result whilst being wide open in midfield. Whilst Neil got involved on the right Jobe was pretty nome existent on the left.

We then changed system and he played attacking midfield where I thought he really struggled at times, though he scored a few goals then and he got better when he was moved upfront for me. After that it was a mixed bag.

He often showed composure and found space in the box from midfield, but too often his general play was barely average - he found it nigh on impossible at times to take the ball on the move / half turn in the final third and his touch and strength up there let him down too often. He showed with moments he has something and yes he's only 18 but he was a shoe in over 45 games and for me he didn't really warrant It, it might have even effected his form.

He may or may not get better, but if there's a chance we could get a big profit and keep Ballard, Neil and move Jobe on meaning we had something to reinvest I'd settle for that.

I really don't get the criticism of Jobe. I wonder if the same people will still be saying he is shite when he is playing in the premier league next year and we are fighting a relegation battle*

Who do people think we are going to replace him with FFS? He is our most successful signing of the last 2 years by a country f***ing mile.

What do people think is happening? We have no coach, any player who is even remotely good enough, at this moment, to be starting regularly in a championship side is being linked with moves away, and our only incoming rumours are a free transfer from West Ham's U21s.

*To be clear I don't actually think he will be leaving. But if he does, along with the likely loss of Clarke and possibly Neil- we would be a far worse team than the one that was promoted under Neil. It would likely mean that we are in serious trouble since.the club has demonstrated over two windows, its not prepared to invest transfer revenue in players of similar quality (in the near term, the idea is that they will improve. but the loss of quality is imminent and needs to be replaced to be competitive)

Just a reminder, he's 18 years old and is miles away from being the finished article. He's still a boy in footballing terms

We're likely to lose Clarke anyway, that's a very high percentage of goals we'd have to replace if both left.

So you are now saying we lose both Jobe and Clarke?
And you know this how?

I'd be disappointed to lose him tbh, would like to see him for at least another season to see how he develops. He has obvious talent was just played far too much last season and it showed on the pitch, he just always looked constantly knackered

I said likely, do you not think there will be interest in Clarke? There is already speculation of clubs wanting him.

Of course, but I very much doubt we will be selling both.
My point still stands, of all the players I think Bellingham is the easiest to replace.

Because people love a scapegoat

You seriously think he may not get better?! He started the season as a 17 year old in the Championship man! He will develop.

You think palaces recruitment team that brought in Eze and Olise are buying him for the name?

All fair. But 17. He’s not 23

Imagine a 17 year old making his debut season in a difficult season contributing the goals and assists he had. We’d all be pulling our plonkers.

The fact is he gets sticks cos his name is Bellingham and people compare him to the best midfielder on the planet.
The issue is that he was over exposed more than anything. When there were games he was really poor (and at his age it will happen), he remained on for the full 90. It builds frustration, irritability and highlights his deficiencies (again all players have them and younger ones more so). The fact it is likely to be something his side requested and something we agreed to to get him here, again builds annoyance when it may be at the detriment of some performances.

If he was used more on rotation as to what his current ability reflects, there would be a lot less criticism or negativity. The fact is it was only our defence really that played more minutes than jobe in a season that ended up being a let down, so he is unfortunately and unfairly at times judged as a much as those more seasoned players

I think Brentford will struggle next season, the 3 teams that came up all have a chance of staying up.
Certainly wouldn't be fussed as long as it mean't ma Bellingham not picking the team

If we didn’t make a decent profit then yes, would be something else to be angry about

Would also need a sizeable sell on fee and other clauses. The next club will likely benefit largely from his next sale and I think they way we brought him on and took a risk, we should get some of it.

EXCLUSIVE: Crystal Palace are in talks to sign Jobe Bellingham as one of their priority targets for the summer.Oliver Glasner wants him and Dougie Freedman is working to convince the player.

He was very good in a team the was nothing sort of a disgrace last season from December onwards. Considering he’s only 18, he’s going to have a great career.
