CC : Durham v Somerset

What a very special talent David Bedingham is. He's underlining this season just how right he was to give up pursuing England qualification. He said he was at his peak right now and couldn't risk not playing internationally for another 2 years or whatever it was and he was dead right.... he is at his peak right now. Long may that continue

I don't know if this has been mentioned at all, but nobody in county cricket has even come close to hitting the 18 sixes that Bedders has, Robbo is second on the list with 12..... and yet.....

and yet........ we are almost certainly going to drop him for the hit and giggle. I find that astonishing, if I'm honest...... and I say that as someone who has defended the need we clearly feel for seasoned T20 bowlers who don't get flogged for 40 or 50 runs off their 4 overs...... and I confess I've already forgotten who the latest overseas signing is

Biggest session of the season coming up in the morning and I genuinely don’t think that’s overstating it.

Was delighted when we had them 84-7 and wasn’t too alarmed when they were able to add 87 for the last three wickets because of Vic’s words regarding the pitch.

Craig Overton was impressive in both of his spells and looked like he could get a wicket at any point, but our innings and the ebb and flow was quite bizarre. They got absolute gift to start (Lees) followed by two fairly ordinary new ball dismissals and we were reeling, but when Bedders and Robinson came together it looked more and more like Vic Demain was bang on about the pitch because batting looked so serene.

Then the floodlights came on.

Olly Robinson suddenly couldn’t lay bat on ball, I think he played and missed at 4 deliveries of Overton’s over and then managed to connect with one from Ball in the next only to guide it into the keepers gloves. Stokes got a decent ball which swung late, or maybe just appeared to with the angle - nobody is as frustrated as me about his three innings for us so far - but I do sympathise somewhat with the situations he’s found himself in. When you consider some of the decks we’ve had this year, it almost seems unfair that he should come in and have to bat on the pitches he has done so far. Clark was a bit twitchy, but his dismissal was an absolute disgrace. I was fuming. AND, for the naysayers (he’ll be along shortly I bet) given my earlier comments about the early Ben Raine shout, I think I have license. What’s more, there was a big appeal by Overton shortly after which looked much closer that wasn’t given when I was certain the finger was going to be lifted. I think GMN1F’s analysis is right, half the time they’re just guessing. That’s as kind as I can be about them.

From a position of strength at 133-3, just 38 behind, suddenly we lost 3-28. That’s what I consider the bizarre aspect. Despite winning the toss and profiting early on with the conditions and likely moisture in the pitch, I feel like Mother Nature has totally shafted us with the late murk which allowed the floodlights to come on and completely change the game. I mentioned earlier my feelings on that, but I just pray that we don’t lose this game (as we did at Essex in the Covid season) off the back of the artificial light gifting Somerset an undeserved way back into the game. I mentioned Overton’s brilliance earlier, but Ball looked absolutely ordinary in his first spell, as did Davey and Gregory - but suddenly when the lights came on Ball was looking like prime Jimmy Anderson. That’s no coincidence. Some may think it harsh, but there’s no way his bowling deserves figures of 3-fer. Atleast not when you consider that Overton only has 2.

So onto the importance of the morning, if Bedders can martial the tail I see plenty of hope to buy into the notion of a lead approaching three figures. Parky showed great composure and maturity (and quite a solid technique) to see us to the Close - I’d love to see him stick around tomorrow. After that, there’s no reason why Raine and Coggers can’t add 20 apiece. They’re more than capable.

Obviously we shall see, I’d take 250 right now, but the concern of course is that we’ll be skittled before midday. Hope we can guard against that.

Ha’way Durham!
We had a bit of a chuckle when Durham started their innings and saw parky go to the nets. The session must have worked

As far a Borthwick goes this is his 4th season since he returned to the club and apart from the occasional innings he has looked a shadow of the batsmen who left the club what 7 years ago. Also he completely lost his way at Surrey after a half decent first season and finished off his time there in the 2nds.

There is still a lot of cricket to play this season but i think we will see very little of Badger during the t20. Hopefully he can turn it around in the 2nd half of the championship.

Dunno what we were thinking giving him a five year contract. Can't see him getting a renewal.

Plan on sitting in the trapdoor stand tomorrow. Fancy catching a ball from Bedingham. Anyone ever caught a ball before at a match or dropped a dolly

I seem to recall either his debut or very early on his Durham career a game at Guilford when we were star studded at the time. He was primarily a leggie who could hold a bat, cant quite see how he has developed into an opening bat who does not bowl

Because his bowling wasn't very good

A bit like Steve Smith. He was a number 8 batsman who bowled leggies when I first saw him in 2010, but went on to be the best batsman in the world, going in at 3

Why do you only criticise him
That's a completely honest appraisal of Scot's form since his return to the club and cannot be ignored. He won't play T20 and needs 2nd XI and good club cricket to hopefully regain confidence in both his batting and bowling. Firstly he requires his faults to be recognised and rectified by a dedicated batting coach. Why hasn't it been done so by the current coaching staff?- the problem is long standing.
I'm sure all who know Scot recognise him as a pleasant, likeable character and a dedicated cricketer.

It’s a huge concern the form of some our batting line up. Borthwick is a shadow of the player who was here before who drove fluently and was good on the cut and pull.

He’s lower in his stance fences at the ball and seems to have no idea where his off stump is. Clarks technique has been fully exposed no foot movement his bat coming at an angle from coverpoint and playing round his front pad.

Ackerman seems to being getting more scratchy and defensive in every innings Robinson and Bedders who seems on another level to everyone else are carrying the unit.

My concern is if Bedders keeps this poacher FC Surrey will come a calling. Hope for an 80 to 100 run lead tomorrow.

He was always a batting all rounder but because he bowled like Shane Warne (aporoach to the wicket) it got a lot of attention because of English crickets obsession with leg spin.
As you say broke into that star studded Durham team as there was a spare place but was never trusted to be the main spinner. Even later when he was being talked about as an England spinner Collingwood played Ryan Buckley as the front line spinner and Borthwick bowled in the 2nd innings or against the tail. But by then his batting had developed and his bowling was becoming more sporadic. But definitely looked a quality bat when we won the championship in 2013.

Really enjoyed yesterday, best days cricket at Riverside so far this year. Just a thought though. Do the pitch inspectors still visit automatically if 15 or more wickets fall on the first day. I thought it looked a good cricket pitch but you know what the ECB think about Durham and taking points off us.

The pitch inspector role is now taken by a match referee appointed and present for every game,James Whittaker in this instance.. One of his duties is to liaise with the Groundsman on pitch preparation and maintenance. Can't see an issue when almost 350 runs were scored in the day.

I think we 350 runs it should all be fine.
