Bit cooler this morning. See what today brings. Either way we've had a good time away and the weather has been wonderful.
Indeed, I suppose if nothing else, there’s a couple of lads still to bat who owe the team an innings.
I was out all day yesterday so missed the action, probably for the best all told, but having looked at the scorecard it’s very clear that the difference in the game has been Jennings. He’s scored 270 runs for his two wickets, given that we currently trail by 340 he’s the obvious match winner for the hosts. I think there are a lot of parallels to the Kidderminster game, both in terms of scores and in the way the wicket appears to be playing. Aside from Jennings their top score in the match is 46, for us, only Bedders has showed too much resolve and I feel like his century was the grittiest he’s ever produced - ultimately, it seems to be a wicket that has produced uneven bounce and probably has a bit of tackiness to it. On top of that, it’s turned from Day 1 and so there’s plenty in it for bowlers to feel they’re in the game.
I’ve refrained from getting involved in too much hysteria so far this season, yes, the bowling hasn’t been as effective as we would’ve hoped and as the whole country seemingly expected given the early season hype - but neither in my view has it been as bad as is being made out. It was naive to think we could come up to Division One and sweep all aside like last year. Fact is, Lancashire were tipped by many at the start of the season to be challengers to Surrey and I just think overall we need to temper our expectations somewhat. Yes, this game isn’t over just yet, but if we do go on to lose this game I still think it’s worth tipping the hat in praise slightly to the fact that the lads have remained unbeaten until more or less the halfway stage. We’ve battled hard to blunt and nullify the attacks of Warwickshire, Essex and Hampfrica where previously we’d have likely lost all three.
The first goal in my view was always to cement our position in the division, it’s going to be a learning curve for a squad that has largely only ever known Division Two cricket but I absolutely do not buy into the concerns up to this point of those crying about relegation and about “taking 8th place now”.
There’s a lot of cricket to be played today, nevermind the rest of the year.

So, can anyone else remember a fairly recent defeat to a not very good side with a sub par batting performance where in the games afterwards Durham went on to dominate? I can.
For balance, in his interview last night Ryan Campbell looked a bit concerned and annoyed, and I don't recall him being that after Sussex.

I think what this block of championship matches has shown is that there is a bigger gulf in quality between the two divisions that what i thought and probably a few more on here and perhaps at the club thought.
Mind due to the fixtures and the weather we have only actually played one game at home so that us a factor as well.
The loss of Borland basically after bowling a handful of overs has been a big blow as well.

I was having a lively conversation with an old bloke who is a bit of a professional moaner on the last day of the Essex game and I gently reminded him that we weren't playing (and no disrespect to them) Leics and Derbyshire this season.
You're spot on about the home fixtures - out of the 24 sessions available we've lost 16 due to the weather....with probably more to follow judging by the forecast.

Well I thought we had a good and I still think so and I'm not yet ready to concede anything given the circumstances of weather, dead pitches etc. I may change my mind though depending on the future and this game is giving pause for thought as the conditions are suitable for a positive result.
The other thing is Campbell appeared concerned to me.
Still never say die, fight to the end, there's always light at the end of a rainbow etc etc etc.
