Roker near Sunderland

Another one 🤣, they're actually correcting me when I've pointed it out, it's in Sunderland

Admin on tour…….
We recently stayed on a rally at Seaburn near Sunderland, Tyne and Wear. Great beaches round there and lots to see and do in the area, please scroll past without commenting if the post doesn’t appeal or check the group search function for previous suggestions of pub stopovers if you like the look of it? :)
I knar exactly which group that was without looking.

Now looked it up and I knar who are too now . So liked your comment so you don't think I'm an anonymous stalker or owt.

I'm it's been pointed out to her loads of times before that Seaburn isn't near Sunderland but in Sunderland.

They are part of the Metropolitan Borough of Sunderland, but they aren't part of the "settlement" of Sunderland. The Metropolitan Borough of Sunderland consists of four settlements, Sunderland, Washington, Houghton and Hetton and is named after it's largest settlement. We wouldn't be having this argument if in 1974 they had named the Metropolitan Borough "Wearside".
The metropolitan Borough of Sunderland ceased to exist in 1992 when the entire borough was reclassified as a city. We used to be a Borough and metropolitan district now we are a city and metropolitan district

I've often spoke to loads of people from Hetton and Houghton who call Sunderland city centre as the town, just like I would
Aye, and they also call people from Sunderland "townies". Do they call themselves townies as well?

Also, my missus is from Hebburn. She calls Newcastle the town. Does that mean Hebburn is in Newcastle?

Then surely the council should have changed all the signposts that say "Sunderland" in Washington etc, to say "city centre" then?

When I was a lad (in the 1960's) the A19 ran down Burdon Road along Fawcett Street accross the Wearmouth Bridge then up Newcastle Road. The A19 was diverted on to it's present course in the early 1970's.

Roads aren't permanent or natural borders like rivers are. Their names and courses are regularly altered especially when they run throught he middle of a city
Diverted when hylton bridge was built

There are git big signs saying the city of Sunderland. Can't be much clearer than that

Yes, it's already been said that is due to the local government reorganisation that created metropolitan boroughs in 1974. The fact they named ours after it's largest settlement has caused this confusion ever since.

Here's a link to the Galleries website:

Why does it give it's address as "Galleries Washington, Washington, Tyne & Wear, NE38 7SD" when if you were correct, it would be "Galleries Washington, Washington, Sunderland, NE38 7SD" ?

Or how about Washington Old Hall:

Address "The Avenue, Washington Village, Washington, Tyne & Wear, NE38 7LE". Again, absolutely no mention of Sunderland.

Purely because of the post code

Is Gosfoth part of Newcastle?

I've been called a towny by people from tunstall

Aye the course of the present A19 was basically the Sunderland bye-pass. That's why the road makes that huge swoop around the west of the town, Before it was built we had to suffer heavy vehicles comming up from Teeside driving right up Fawcet and crosssing the Wearmouth Bridge in order to make their way to the Tyne, It wasn't built to define the limits of the City of Sunderland anymore than the North Circular Road defined what became Greater London.

It's not though it was all about balancing populations to give an equal population to each of the 5 Tyne and Wear areas.

Washington was originally meant to be part of Gateshead btw with Whitburn and Seaham being part of Sunderland. But because of the rapid house building it all got swapped around and Seaham booted out altogether.

It's why the borders are a complete mess in the Birtley area.

It's something I quite often moan about but more so because they slashed straight through the middle of up here. It's why you have stuff like Cramlington split in half (Dudley etc are Cramlington) and the absolute mess around Hazlerigg where there's a random triangle in Newcastle and the rest in North Tyneside.

Remember this discussion is about where people will recognise places as not where they are on paper.

No it isn't. It's a factual debate about Seaburn being in Sunderland. Since then people including you are putting caveats on there. Facts remain Washington, Hetton a Houghton are part of the city of Sunderland.

In time the surrounding areas will be known as Sunderland. Just as Pallion, Southwick, Hylton for example were all separate parishes originally.

Whitburn is SR6 as it's in the same post town as Sunderland as are Seaham & Murton etc, old Post Office areas from years ago, but strangely enough if you go on Google maps & click on any business etc in Whitburn the listed address will be Whitburn, Sunderland SR6, no mention of South Tyneside, the comp also uses Sunderland in their address on official correspondence.
I think it's a bit like those who still put Sunderland, Co Durham as their address. 😉
A pal of mine is born and bred Whitburn.
We call him a Sand Dancer!!! He hates it.
Not a true Sandy I know….,,but a good wind up.
