yeah, huddersfield, coventry and boro are awful for it. hard to get anything going when the home support have some clown banging a drum next to the away end even when none of their fans are singing

Boro away last season (not the one just finished) were superb. One of the best I’ve witnessed in many a year.

I avoid watching boro on tv as all you can hear is the same song over and over nothing to do with what’s happening on the pitch, been to palace a few times and it’s overrated there too when you are actually in the ground you can hardly hear the few hundred ‘ultras’ I’m sure sky must mic that area up

Definitely. Our atmospheres are built on instinct and emotion rather than a pre rehearsed song list aided by someone banging a drum.

That being said, I’ve loved some of the displays we’ve put on and fully welcome colour and celebration of our traditions.

Aye the displays are class it’s a shame social media has such a loud voice for a few criticising the group , I’m sure most who go to games appreciated the effort they put in to make them happen

I am at the back of U38 and can honestly say I have never noticed them.
I thought you must be on about mid 50s fans, Levi's and brogue shoes.
 
Whichever way its looked at its flat as fook but it stems from whats going on on the pitch. Been in Roker park particularly the 85 cup run where i am sure capacity was down to about 26000 and the atmosphere was 2nd to none. At the minute its shocking but as said very hard with whats going on. Sure the Green brigade came about under similar circumstances during strachan management. Place was flat. Cant be argued they now generate one of the best atmospheres anywhere. Drum or no drum 😉

Love the flags and surfers, and encouraging the fans to sing throughout the game would be great, as that's always been part of our culture, but not sure I'd like to see the ultra stuff. It's a bit corny, and manufactured. Some of the Ultra displays with big cartoon images hoisted on pulleys or whatever, look like something out of a school play. I even cringe at the banners they hold up at the front of the stand that have at the front of the stand, looks soft, self indulgent, and generally crap - the Mags are masters of it, and even hold up full blown paragraphs. Would rather they just read Sunderland slogans: "Keep the red flag flying high", "Keep the Faith", "We are Sunderland"

Thing is some fans really love the modern day 'ultras' section clubs seem to have these days, and clubs like Palace now have a cracking atmosphere at Selhurst Park.
We're at the other end of the spectrum where the atmosphere at the SOL is non existent and I think this does impact on the team at times.

although i agree in part, i wonder what the fans of roker park in the 1930s would think about the fans of the 1990's singing about niall quinns disco pants? probably the same feeling that the current older generation feel towards the way football fan culture is heading now

Good point. I'm no fan of the orchestrated Ultra chanting, but it looks like that's the way football is going. I still think the sporadic roars of encouragement to try and get the team on the front foot at The SOL are uniquely loud.

The set up of our ground also means that currently there is no back and forth between home and away fans (mainly due to the acoustics meaning they can barely hear each other from the North/South stands). If there was a lull in the atmosphere years ago, you could at least rely on that between SWC and away fans.

Yeh maybe. Although it feels like that evolved over time, while the Ultra stuff feels imported, and a bit of a cartoon version of our own thing (granted we don't really do that "thing" anymore).
