Joe Root calls for a reduction in county cricker

Worse even that that, there were countless examples of teams finishing a day of Championship cricket on the Saturday night, travelling somewhere else in the country for a Sunday League game and then returning to the Championship venue the same night for the resumption of the Championship game on the Monday morning.
The good old days

Cant argue with the popularity of the short forms but they completely coach the character out of the game. Bland flat pitches and encouraging 20 over games of 200 plays 200. I don't think it's as exciting as a low scoring test match in conditions that really test your skill and mentality.
I like T20 but not the IPL and even more so this season. Teams are consistently getting scores of 250+, they may as well play 11 batters against a bowling machine.

let’s be honest, who wants to watch red ball cricket when you can have the Abu Dhabi Aces playing the Doha Dashers?

Sponsored by Emirates

The scoop shots, the laughter when you drill one to long on, the free t shirts from that stupid gun thing. It’s got it all
Don’t knock the T shirt gun please. Generations of obnoxious whooping and hollering Americans were brought up to the sound of the T shirt gun firing.

Root has an England central contract and can command his pick of franchise contracts anywhere in the world. He’s all right Jack (or Joe, in this case)

So f@ck 80% of his fellow pros (presumably members of the PCA, for whom he claims to speak) who don’t have this luxury, county members, other supporters of the game etc etc.

Monumental tw@t if you ask me.

He complains of too little ret time prior to Test matches. When TF has he and his England mates had too little rest time because of county cricket? They mostly don't play it and when they do it's their choice. They can pick and choose to play when as they please and when they do play it's often to prepare for Tests. Complete and utter bollocks.
Test cricketers fly around the world and Tests are intense, I get that. But they do get their rests and less County Cricket wont help them. Then you've got the crew who are part of the International T20 circus, phft! their choice, not just big time charlies but in the circus they're big time Charlie Cairolis. Do me a favour.
Lastly, if you're going to have a County Cricket competition then it has to be competitive and workable given that games will be lost to weather. 14 games is less than the minimum for an interesting competition.
The bottom line for me is, kill first class cricket and you kill Test cricket and very likely if you kill Test cricket you kill the whole T20 circus.

Funny how he doesnt complain about the international schedule being too busy like Stokes has. Probably because the domestic game is too easy a target.

It wasnt the domestic games fault we turned up to the ODI WC in India a week before it started and didn't seem to understand how to play ODI cricket or know that its hot in India.

Does Joe not remember it was county cricket that developed his talent and gave him the pathway to become a professional? And now he has made it, he'd like to limit those opportunities for others?

England needs a strong domestic game and people like him need to stop pissing on it.

I wonder what Billy Root at Glamorgan thinks of his brother's comments?

This is the Billy Root who struggled for opportunities to play at Nottinghamshire before joining Glamorgan. If there were fewer games being played when he started out then he would have found playing opportunities even harder and maybe his cricket career may never have even taken off.

I thought Joe was rather fond of his brother having watched him drop him at slip a couple of days ago but maybe I was wrong.

Root's just left the field mid game at Headingley. Probably because he cant be arsed and has gone home to watch Escape to the Country on tv. He'll come back when its finished if he can be arsed.

And to get there you need more quality and less quantity imo
Have a f*cking day off will you
There is plenty people who respect the likes of Root and Strauss and what they have done for the game and strongly respect their views and judgements and want a strong England cricket team.

If that means reducing some games and you dont like it could not give a fuck mate.

It’s a board for opinions and that my genuine opinion that Root has a very very good point

What would you change?

We could get rid of The Hundred given no other country plays that format. It adds little value as a format to us from an international perspective as we already have T20. But then it makes money so it wont be going anywhere.

First thing I would do is have one short format tournament not two, and would change it from 100 balls to T20.

No other country has two short format tournaments

However I would have it bang in the summer in the slot the hundred is now, for maximum exposure.

Embrace the change that has happened in every other country and have a designated window for it.

Then rest of the summer for more quality and less quantity red ball cricket
Work with the fact short format cricket is popular all around the world and get the balance right between longer and shorter format rather than constantly belittling it.
