The ground staff said on day one the ground was already at saturation point then. It’s not really the amount of rain overnight that’s the issue.

They really need a few days for things to dry out to give them half a chance

It can and those to blame are those who can't/won't invest in full ground covers. The ground was playable for the University game. There are such things as weather forecasts. Rather than keep their fingers crossed and hoping, actually do something preventative rather than driving round on machines with sponges on the wheels mopping it up after it has fallen on the ground.Completely amateur hour.

It would be interesting if members were able to apply for pro-rata refunds at the end of the season for days lost. Excuse my ignorance but they may be able to.

I hope the outcome of the season is not affected by the potential bonus points 'lost' that we may have got even with limited play.

If we get another wet August, I bet preventative efforts are made to ensure the ODI v Australia goes ahead in the event of more rain in September prior to the game.

I remember an interview with one of Durham's previous groundsmen some years ago and he said "I can control what water goes on the ground from above, but I cannot control what comes from below".
Clearly the difficulty of working on a ground so close to a river and the "water table".
 
Just to prove a point, get a tarpaulin and peg it down to cover your lawn. Leave it for a week then remove and observe the results. I won't be doing it.

Use a translucent material, add a slope, let gravity take it's course and divert into drains. The result is quite different.

Riverside is an international sports stadium not a village club.

Apparently comments were blocked because they became abusive and personal it’s not about criticism. And the outfield was not the problem, the covering was adequate, the volume of rain and saturation levels are the issue. Every drying period during this game has been followed by rain. Do people think the club don’t want the game to go ahead and that very experienced grounds staff haven’t done everything in their power to get this game on?!

Clearly some posters don't know the meaning of the word "saturated".

I'm surprised they no got so much play in at Old Trafford yesterday. They haven't started today and I think it only rained for a couple of hours overnight. The ground is soaked, any rainfall makes it unplayable here too.

If the water table is that high though does covering the ground do anything or will the water from everywhere around the ground just soak the oval under the cover too?

I agree but, this year has been exceptional and last year ended wet and the summer was pretty wet too.

This happens with British weather, every year is different, we go through cycles of bad/good periods of weather. Sooner of later we'll get another 1976.

The Romans invented drains about 2,500 years ago. Hopefully cricket may catch on in time for this year's 16.4 clown cricket.

I've posted a link to a product that is designed specifically to protect grounds from bad weather in worse climates than ours. It allows light in, it allows people to work underneath and is motorised.

I've utterly sick of people finding reasons why things 'can't be done'. A backwards attitude that will contribute to the death of county cricket. A sport sadly in so many ways that hurts itself, without the actions of those in power who seem desparate to see it die.

We can't go to the moon, it's canny far away and we might not get back. Best do nothing then. Best not leave the house, we might get knocked down.
