They clearly needed a frontline spinner today. They used 7 bowlers and were bowling a part time offie before lunch.

They are playing this round of games with the Kookaburra ball.

Been brought in to aid production of spinners in England and Somerset would rather give an Aussie part timer the ball than a their own lad who took 2 fifers in India.

Will see how Matt Parkinson goes as to how bad of a decision it was by them.

Most of the counties playing have picked an English spinner for this round of games.

Somerset only of the only ones that haven't. Even when they had one inexplicably not picked.
Edit: just checked and Somerset only side that hasn't picked a spinner that can play for England.

Carlson/Carson being Welsh and NI. For Glamorgan and Sussex

Not true at all, one of the main reasons we went up last year was our spin bowlers, we got 3 loans in, always picked a spinner on every surface, especially flat ones

Simply incorrect this post IMO

They were also bowling a party time offy before lunch, so clearly an incorrect call.

They dont need to, this is just poor tactics and management really, which will cost them points throughout the season if its their philosophy

I dont think this is a point about wider problems with spin, more just ridiculous tactics by muddled management.

My bad Somerset did have an English spinner in the side.

He picked up his first, first class wicket today.

Their 7th bowler and number 6 batter. So I think save to say they did need a frontline spinner when they ended up using two part timer top order batters.

We've come a long way since Ciderlabad.

There'll be little, if any, play at OT today. It's hammered it down all night.

We did it right last year flat pitches and a balanced attack including a good spinner and (importantly) used as a wicket taking threat. And even with a flat pitch I don't recall much difficulty in taking wickets in the kookaburra games.

Well, well. It will be interesting to hear how this possible illegal bat issue goes for Essex.
Essex had their noses in front again by the close, although they lost Feroze Khushi to a catch at first slip, finishing on 65 for 1. A further twist to an eventful final session may follow if what appeared to be Khushi's bat is confirmed to have exceeded the regulation size after an on-field check by the umpires required it to be changed.
