I've said elsewhere Speakman's position should be under review. It’s probably more than a lot of clubs spent in this league all summer. Speakman managed to find such gems as Mayenda, Burstow, Triantis, etc etc all of which have been as much good to the first team squad as the hole in the stadium roof.
Couldn’t have done much more !!!
Makes me wonder when he’ll be held to account. Mowbray was dismissed for his first poor run of form this season, Beale then gets the push after 12 games. Speakman has failed three transfer windows in a row …. who’s doing his appraisal ?
I do however think it's blatantly obvious we have one of the smaller budgets in the league. Beale even said as much - the first time I can recall anyone from the club going on record about it.
According to this we had the 7th highest expenditure, though it was only a little over the Ross Stewart fee.
If you look at our balance, we're actually way down the list, which isn't ideal. You compare that with Leicester, who managed to spend the best part of £45m and still turn a £62m profit. How the hell are we supposed to compete with that?
Perhaps we could have scouted better players than the ones our £12m got, but who were they? Did they want to come? What wages would they have wanted? Our wage bill is reportedly the 20th lowest in the league.
Then there's timing to consider. Will Keane moved to Preston in July. Did we have Will Keane money in July? Or were we waiting to see if we could do better than Will Keane once the Stewart deal was done?
It's just not that straight forward. £10m-£12m isn't a lot of money.
I agree, too many players aren't ready or haven't worked out. Project Bellingham has crippled us in my opinion. Was that not something like a £3m outlay early doors? And the bugger's played too many games contributing far too little. We still could stand to make a massive gain on him, time will tell, but I'm more interested in football results than balance sheets.
