Keel Crossing [opened 18.10.25] - compendium thread

From the contractors site. Should be open this summer??

The bridge is expected to open in summer 2024. It will feature creative lighting and augmented reality, allowing people to use their smartphone to see virtual displays.

Hopefully by creative lighting they mean
the bridge can be illuminated Red n White when SAFC play at home.

I worked on the Infinity Bridge at Stockton and our offices were twenty yards from the Southern side. A few older fellas in the office said exactly this at the time.
The bridge has since attracted investment and the north shore side is now developed with housing and offices.

The potential for the Sheepfolds far outweighs anything that has happened at Stockton.
Stood in the middle of the Infinity bridge, wind was howling down the Tees, hate to imagine what the wind speed was but normally wind seems to blow in gusts then ease off but it was just constant. Was hoping the new footbridge was going to have a similar look to the Infinity, great design but actually think less is more and the new bridge doesn't detract from the Wearmouth. The extra pint bridge, great name. Agree, potential with Sheepfolds is massive.

I wonder if anyone on the Sunderland corruption page has seen that. The page started a rumour saying they works stopped because they've ran out of funding and everyone believed it 😄

Some of them still don’t believe that the bridge will be 35m up at the same level of the wearmouth and will thus stop ships going up the river.

There are 2 bridges next to each other in the plan.
The high level one is under construction.
The other is a low level bridge linking the riversides north and south and will stop ships using the river.

The proposed low level bridge maybe designed to have a removeable central span

Yes but the low level bridge is just an idea in a masterplan at the moment, so it could be designed as a mechanical bridge if they choose to which would allow boats to travel up river. Whether there is merit in doing that due to cost and ongoing maintenance is another matter.

It's just a proposal, considering it's taken 100+ years to get a new bridge in the town centre , I doubt the next one will be coming any time soon.

However, if it did come, it would mean that down by the river on both sides must be having massive investment and developments to make even the suggestion of a low level bridge viable..

If it did and it was, then I'm sure they'd take into consideration the effect of what size boats need access up river .

Has the low level bridge been declared a conspiracy theory?
