North Stand extension

49k is too big for sunderland.

40,000 to 42,000 is about right.

Can't remember sunderland ever selling out even in the prem. 49k too large.

Bore off man. Without ever being successful since 1997 when the stadium opened (2000 for the extension) we've averaged over 42k about 5 times in the last 25 years. Something Leeds United have never managed in their history.

SAFC highest attendances during that 25 years or so has been over 42k 19 times.

When you were mid table in prem you didnt sell out.

Plenty of 37k crowds.

Only way you sell 49k now every home game is if you are challenging for top 6 European places in prem.

You aren't selling 49k mid table in prem.

Crowds in football have increased in general recently. As it stands we would sell out every week if we were promoted.

Then we could do a Leeds and pretend we could sell out a 9 million seat stadium.

People saying it shouldn't have been done - bloody good job it was. Cost a fortune to build the north stand extension now. Luton have done nothing else but spent money on players and very little on their infrastructure. All the PL money they make this season will be needed to build their new ground. Would we rather now be in the PL like Luton playing in front of 18k at Roker Park or be in the Championship with 48k at the Sol? Knowing any money we made in the PL would be needed to build a modest stadium next season at today's prices and leave very little for players. That's what Luton will be doing. Fans going on about threadbare carpets, flaky paint, generally run down, looks like we aren't spending much on either players or the ground so any talk of further extensions is just crazy. I think the Sol capacity is about right, the old girl just needs some maintenance. I loved Roker Park but the Sol is magical too in its own way, actually quite attached to her.

Yes stadium was open a few years and around 2000 the north stand was increased due to demand. If we'd known we were going to be one of the worst ran clubs in the country, record breaking relegations and then go a decade after that to have the darkest period in the clubs history then they wouldn't have extended it. It was beyond the worst case scenario. But if we'd been reasonably well ran nobody would have questioned it and it would have been the correct decision.

I agree with the post above though that the team should have been prioritised first though. Got to look after the short term in this game but I'd never be too critical of an owner investing in infrastructure

Reid wasted so much money, at least we have something to show for the investment in the statement

Where did you get that bollocks from? Did you just make it up? I’ve been at Roker Park when I sat on the edge of the pitch in a 63,000 crowd and outside of Roker Park when up to 100,000 were outside but many thousands couldn’t get in. What about the cup tie vs Man City when I was in the 53,000 crowd?

Give the City a team and the fans will be there just like against Newcastle in the cup.

Cost nearly as much to extend the north stand as it did the full ground

I remember going to a reserve game when the roof was off and got soaked. Might have been Milton Nunez debut

Hello, I'm new to this board and a Dutch Sunderland fan. Good Afternoon to you.

Back to being a Leeds fan again are we, the Dutch Sunderland fan from London who really supports Leeds but ultimately is a mag?

Told they just lift the roof off the extension just slides in place on top.

You spelled Newcastle wrong.

Circa 7m for extension wasn't it? Original build circa £15m.

I wasn't criticising sunderland. Sunderland have very good support but it's very difficult to get 50,000 plus crowds every other week. There are a handful of clubs who could do that.

Sunderland is a big club, no doubt. Excellent support too.

In my book I wrote of England's biggest clubs, I have Sunderland as Englands 15th biggest. So by that logic you should be in the prem right now.

If you’re a Leeds fan, why did you say you were a Sunderland supporter and have also showcased a Portsmouth badge as your avatar today?
