How come so few people turn up for midweek games?

Going back to the Roker Park days, more often than not that was when the old place was at its best. Most of the best atmospheres I remember at Roker Park were night time games. It always felt better under the lights. A bit more magical. Have to say they are horrible now. Absolutely soul destroying again tonight.

Havay man get behind the lads no matter what day we play! Top 6 still very much there for us but everyone has to do their bit!

Way more than 25k there. I remember being part of 25k crowds under McCarthy and it was a lot more sparse then.

In our family we have three season cards, but my dad is 77, not very mobile, and can’t handle the cold, so he misses games like tonight. My son, bless him, doesn’t really like football despite my best efforts (more into computer games), so doesn’t want to go back.
 
I remember reading back in the SOLs early days that SAFC had the largest % of ST holders who lived over 100km away in England. Even if that’s not strictly true these days there’ll still be a large %.

That is a very fair point
There’s a lad behind me who shouts /encourages all game -I think fair play you at least put in the egoist well in week out

The numbers dosnt always equate to atmosphere-we are by far biggest in numbers but I would say some of our best noise has been when lesser numbers in
One sticks in my memory v arsenal in a cup game -half full but fans were immense
Look at the Mag owners -they complaining about a full stadium and lack of noise
It’s who is there not how many
That Arsenal game the players with a few “ challenges “ really got the crowd going
I feel at games fans are wanting to get behind side at all ends of ground it just not well co ordinated .
Roker wasn’t but by heck did everyone get involved -I’ve heard one or two great roars this season that took me back and would love us to repeat those days
At my age do I have a soloution? -no I don’t but a simple roar by the South onto the west then to other parts with everyone participating has happened -are their no “ natural “ singing end leaders in the South who are there week in week out ?
just needs to be led by the South for me
Mind Roker wasn’t always electric but they roar man -spine tingling.
Love it and I’ve commented many times how great it is at sol when it goes around the ground -visibly lifts players intensity so it is important discussion

We had 30,000 v Fulham in the Cup last season when we had to give an actual crowd figure because the gate receipts are shared. Just compare the 2 games. Was far more in the stadium v Fulham than there was v Huddersfield
 
Last December I was up home, just north of Newcastle, for the home game v Millwall and didn't have my car with me. The buses were awful in comparison with when I last regularly used them before I could drive in 1994. I have looked at coming up on the train and fitting in a midweek game too but looking at the buses I can't see how I'd manage without the additional expense of taxis. Public transport across the wider region must have an impact on our attendances.
 
Couple next to me and a whole family in the row in front never turn up for midweek games. I’d expect that happens all over the stadium and adds up to a fair number.

Twisting about getting 30k plus in the championship midweek. Our crowds are ridiculous if you want to look at what fans have been put through for years. Lack of ant real success. One thing you cannot criticise at this club is the fans.

Don't take it so personally. I was just asking people's thoughts on why our midweek crowds are so much lower than our weekend crowds (around 10k or so difference). Been the case for a number of years. Back in the RP days i always used to prefer night tome games as did many others. No need to get upset over it.
 
Although I was there on Weds, I have to confess to missing a few of the midweek games across the season.

Like a decent proportion of our fans, I don't live in the area. Getting up there midweek - especially in winter months - is a difficult job after you've allowed for traffic and parking. I then don't get home till midnight and that can be too late if I've got my lad with me. If I don't go, I know I can watch the game via the Sky red button.

People have busy lives and midweek games are an extra challenge, time-wise. If you have a SC, then you've prob allowed for a few games being missed anyway.. you're still better off rather than purchasing match-by-match.
