Euro 2028 Stadiums

My biggest concern at the moment is this new combined mayor, we fell miles behind when tyneside devel corp was set up (TWDC) and most of the money was funnelled into Newcastle
Agree with this and yet personally want devolution. We would have to get a fair deal.
I was at the bob murray thing last night and he (rightly) had a go at John Hall who gave sunderland absolutely nothing when on the millennium committee and sabotaged us buying land around the stadium. (The bastard used to be a Sunderland season ticket holder.) The blatant nepotism towards Newcastle can't be repeated and we need a fair deal, not paying for newcastle like we did with the metro ...and still do to an extent.

This was for 2024 and I’m not sure why they went with Newcastle over Sunderland (not convinced it was one or the other bar spreading it about).

All the kind of things people think are issues or the reason Newcastle were picked over Sunderland are not real issues. The host city just needs an airport within a 2 hour drive, so Newcastle can be used, tees valley can be and possibly Leeds/Bradford? For hotels it reads like good transport links to hotels within 100km so all of the hotels in Newcastle could come into the Sunderland bid and vice-versa even if that is on a smaller scale.

Correct, it is not confirmed that we will expand the stadium before the Euros nor is any new capacity decided. Also if we expand the stadium that would mean that we would have to demolish or move the fanzone (which itself is not built yet)

At the end of the day SJP was selected because of what it can offer right now not some possible future state.
So any stadium expansion would have to be postponed until after 2028 as a consequence.

Let's hope this time the games aren't played in front of half empty stadiums as was the case in 1996 (Wembley excepted). For one game (think it was Bulgaria v Romania at Sid James) there was about 15000 max.

Casement Park is looking in serious doubt. Shame the club are being proactive about any SOL redevelopment
I'd say it will still be built. The unionists want to veto any extra spending but the money is coming from the UK government anyway so they can do nothing about it. It should have been built a long time ago when funding was allotted to upgrade a stadium each for rugby, football and GAA. Now surprise surprise the costs have spiralled. The Irish government might stump up some of the shortfall as a goodwill gesture but it would be a bit of a disaster if Northern Ireland missed out on hosting games because a stadium couldn't be constructed in 5 years! It would be great for Belfast.

All stadiums other than Belfast over 50k in capacity so I dont think it’s too much of an injustice we missed out.

1. Wembley Stadium (London) (capacity 90,652)

2. Principality Stadium (Cardiff) (73,952)

3. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium (London) (62,322)

4. Etihad Stadium (Manchester) (61,000)

5. Everton Stadium (Liverpool) (52,679)

6. St James' Park (Newcastle) (52,305)

7. Villa Park (Birmingham) (52,190)

8. Hampden Park (Glasgow) (52,032)

9. Aviva Stadium (Dublin) (51,711)

10. Casement Park (Belfast) (34,500)

Mind I went to a Euro 96 game at Sid James’ and there can’t have been any more than 20k there.
Villa park is only 42 k isn’t it?

I am not obsessed by Sunderland as such. This forum does intreague me though. There is so much Bollox spouted by some on here and you are a main culprit.

When confronted all you ever have is to say that things like "we are obsessed" or "go back to your own forum" or ban us.

Literally thousands of pages about NUFC, and without exception they get hidden away in RTGs online shame dungeon ultimately. But yeah sure - it is us few NUFC fans that read it and challenge it that are obsessed.

I shall await my ban.

Honestly if we were in your position and you were in ours I honestly wouldn't give Newcastle a second thought. You're in the upper regions of the Premier League, flying high in the Champions League, have more money than you know what to do with yet here you are constantly on here trying to bait Sunderland fans.

Is your life, and your Newcastle supporting experience so empty that you still need to be doing this?

It really is a question you need to be asking yourself marra.

This.

99 percent of the focus/images in peoples heads are from the England games at the old Wembley, when as you mention I recall a large number of the games elsewhere being played to laughably small crowds.

If casement won't be ready roi should be trying to get pair ui caoimhe as the second venue. Would need temporary seating put in on the terraces but is a relatively new stadium and the plans were already in place for the failed rugby world cup bid . Casements Park is a gaa ground anyway . We wouldn't have the ambition to even put the name forward mind .

Totally agree about it being brilliant for Belfast mate, but I’m not convinced they will find the cash.

I must admit, it does seem wrong that a GAA stadium is getting a major refurb for a football tournament mind. Back in March the IFA were still looking at options for Windsor Park, which would feel the better option

19,000
26 and 30 at the other 2 games

The crowds were poor but there were virtually no fans that travelled from the 3 countries in the group. I went to one of the France games and there was a few hundred of them.

The GAA are a far more competent organisation in both North and South of Ireland than either of the football associations. I'd have far more faith that they would get it ready in time .
The GAA are obviously putting in money aswel but think only 15 million is promised . They also own the property .
Leo varadkar also said ROI would be willing to foot some of the bill .

Not necessarily. But if they start an expansion they would have to finish it before the tournament begins
That was my point. Difficult to complete a stadium extension and revamp in 4.5 years when not even a feasibility study exists. Planning and construction would also be protracted in a city centre location. If it can't be done in 4.5 years as appears likely, it won't be able to start until 2028 and then won't be complete until the early 2030s. A long wait.
