Middlesex

So that’s the Yorkshire debacle now this total double standards it really got under some of the old shirt and tie brigade our success.

But they have been happy to take the numerous Durham players for the England team can’t wait till next year back in Division 1.

Rightly so. Whilst I genuinely have no wish to see any county in financial difficulty AND therefore penalised by a demotion or points deduction - because it achieves NOTHING but makes the situation all the more difficult to get out of - it seems very much like we were being punished not because of any financial mismanagement but because we had become a challenger (and indeed gone past) Graves’ own county. He wanted us to suffer. Horrible horrible bastard.

If we were the test case, it appears that the ‘new ECB’ have learnt that ‘FTECB’ got it wrong all along.
I will never move on from it like

My feelings exactly.

Trying to look at it objectively, Middesex’s punishment for financial mismanagement is probably fair enough. Durham’s was clearly disproportionate and unfair. Perhaps that could have been expected if there was fraud or dishonesty involved, but there wasn’t.

What I’ve never really understood is why the club accepted this. There was no appeal. It’s all well and good Bostock saying the ECB have effectively made good, but afaik, we as members/ supporters have never had this explained.

Some might argue that we should get over ourselves and move on, but personally I find that difficult. The injustice we suffered was appalling.

I recall having conversations with supporters of Worcs, Leics and Derbyshire down at the Riverside and the common theme was that none of them could understand how Durham simply accepted their draconian punishment.

I always believed there was chance that the ECB would stop the bailout of the club if the club had appealed against the punishment. Essentially had us over a barrel and we could do nothing about it

Possibly, but I hate the fact that whenever this comes up (just like at the time) the credit tends to go to FTECB for saving us when in reality Durham County Council did far more in terms of both immediate AND long term financial support.

Ultimately, we were (and still are) worth far too much to the country for us to be allowed to fail.

People who say that don't understand the passion of DCCC supporters.

In my opinion Graves had a bitter hatred of us and didn't like the way we were getting decent international cricket which might have otherwise been awarded to Headingley. He therefore saw his chance and in business terms almost murdered us.

It's taken us a while to recover but now we're back...and I fully believe we'll get test cricket back too against decent sides.

My understanding is that the door is open now for us to host test cricket but financially it's not yet viable. It will be eventually though.

So **** off Graves.

almost feels like a slap in the in face when you hear Bostock say we dont want test cricket, feels like a lets not rock the boat and upset the ECB, do any supporters not want test cricket back at Durham. I thought grounds no longer had to bid for games?? youd think we'd want the money

His point has been that if Durham are given a test, it will be against less attractive opposition at the beginning or end of the season, so it will be more difficult to sell out. They therefore prefer ODIs and T20s which will (certainly the men’s games), the aim being to get 2 a season.

So it’s more a case of careful business planning (his argument, not mine btw).

ECB STATEMENT ON MIDDLESEX
AND DIFFERENCES WITH DURHAM

Decisions regarding sanctions on Middlesex imposed for financial irregularities have been painstakingly worked through by ECB, lawyers, MCC and sponsors.

We have placed Middlesex in an effective and robust plan to help them get through this time and learn from the mistakes made, which were numerous.

The differences between these financial issues and Durham County Cricket Club were two-fold. Durham
is Northern and easy to forget and MCC members are very wealthy people whom we treat like kings, and we wouldn't want to upset them like we did the northern monkeys. We still believe it's right to retain the block
on test matches being played at Chester-le-Street. To help redress the balance we will be making a further
test available to Lord's.
