Russell Martin has Ross Stewart as his main target **Transfer confirmed **

I dont need to know the figures. My argument is that we should pay him his worth based on his market value for our division. If he leaves to go to another club in our division, it means we would t pay him his worth, based on his market value at this level.

I’m saying that would be both (1) a massive cause for concern; and (2) downright disgraceful, particularly given that we can offset a chunk of any wage settlement by virtue of the fact we would t be paying a fee for him (an advantage no other team has).
So if Southampton offered him £50k a week that’s that “market rate” & that’s what we should do. Complete bollocks.

Are you operating under the assumption that Southampton are just going to waste their money?

Whatever a club at this level is willing to offer him is - by exact definition - his championship market value. That’s what a market is.
At an auction, some people get carried away with "auction fever" and vastly pay over the odds for an item. That doesn't make it the benchmark for other similar items, just makes them look like twats. Reference our bidding for Grigg, Ndong and many others, and it's not confined to Sunderland either.

At an

That poster is best ignored, if he's remotely serious then he's also utterly daft.

This place is completely overrun by wums, undercover-mags and thickies. It's hard to tell them apart and even harder to keep any thread from going off the rails.

How much do you think a like for like replacement would cost us? By that I mean a player that we could be confident would be as good as him, and do the same all round job.

Ellis Simms costs £8m these days. So how much for a Ross Stewart “replacement”? £12m? Conservative guess?

Spread that £12m initial outlay over a four year contract. Then add the wages and signing in fee for said “replacement”. Then weigh all of that up against the cost of paying Ross Stewart the Championship going rate.

I know which one I think works out cheaper. If the plan was ever to properly replace him, of course.

We can’t compete in wages with Saints. It’s ridiculous to think we could.

Losing LND on a free would be madness. We might do so in any case as he doesn’t need to either leave or sign a new deal.

Keeping him because we think he’ll come back and score loads of goals and sign a new deal is a magical though but we need some reality.

The issue is I assume we’ve got nothing lined up if we sell.

It shouldn’t have come to this. It’s mismanagement of the drown jewels. Sadly is anyone surprised ?

they have parachute money and sold players for tens of millions...how on earth could we be expected to compate with that?

The parachute money primarily covers them for the fact they’re carrying a squad full of players on legacy premier league wages. The idea that these clubs just have all of the parachute money sitting in an account waiting to be spagfed up a wall is for the birds.

Get what we want for him if we don’t then keep him for the season hopefully gets a boat load of goals and makes us competitive no point in selling for a pittance

are they? i thought they sold the big earners...and that frees jp the para money to be spent on new players...
they have sold £150mn worth of players this summer..thats a lot of wages covered before they even look at the parachute money..

how much have safc raised from selling players this summer?

Players with only a year left on their deals have gone for big money this summer. Hope we do the same and get a proper fee for him. Not holding my breath mind.

Parachute money, money from competing in the PL and player sales this summer. I can't understand how we can't compete with that, a real head scratcher.
Doesn't prove anything either way
It proves he's played at a higher level than any of our current strikers.

They have 40% reduction in wages on relegation. Keep up.

Compete with what? The market rate at our level of the game, for one of our own players?

If you don’t understand how we might compete with that, then the clubs “expectation management” strategy and podcast scripting really has been on point. Fair play to them. Job done.

Poor little old Sunderland. How can such a poor little old club ever hope to compete.

What do you think man, are you genuinely this dense or just on a wind up? This poor little Sunderland thing you keep trotting out is pathetic as well.
