Ben Stokes post ashes series

I think the mere prescence of stokes may be what they are looking for

I mean remember, if you can, Ian Botham playing in the 92 World Cup , waddling in off ten paces and bowling the Aussies out as we made the final

he was virtually a ceremonial player during that tournament and used as an opener pinch hitting

The game is like night and day compared to then though in regards to limited overs cricket.

Bigger picture says this is the wrong call. He won’t bowl, so his pick isn’t going to improve the balance. We aren’t exactly short of exciting young white ball batsmen. Although they’ve probably hardly played a 50 over game in their lives.

We haven’t now got a test match until February, this period would’ve been best spent to get some work done on his knee to prolong him in test cricket for which he is the captain of.

I can’t help but fear this is going to end badly.

Agree, no place for sentimentality - i more mean this in terms of him resting/op if needed etc more so than whether he deserves a spot in the team

It’s a World Cup happens once every 4 years and should be one of the highlights of a players career.

For me more important than an India test series which will be a extremely difficult anyway if they prepare big turning wickets as they did last time.

I would have respected his decision either way so much do I hold him in esteem as a cricketer.

But I am over the moon, such a proven big game player has decided to try and help his country win a World Cup.

Lets not kid ourselves he’s easily one of the top few batsman in any format regardless of which sloggers are already in the ODI too 7.

You can't really blame him or the England set up for prioritising the here and now. There's no guarantees if he sits out that he'll be 'fixed' and he'll be six months older and the next World Cup years away. If he was 10 years younger, different story.

Who loses their place for him ? He hasn't played in over a year. I get why they want him in, but there'll be players who have played ODIs for England in the past 12 months that are going to get dumped because Stokes has decided he wants to play.
