The Hundred 2023

‘ Dad can you take me to the cricket tonight, my friends from school going and I want to get into cricket’

‘ I have been watching on the telly and looks great would love to go in the school holidays’

‘ No son I not taking you there as the match tonight destroying the county game’:D
If that dad and kid are in Washington, Newcastle , Sunderland then the expense to get to and from to Leeds ?

those dad and kids are being given no reason to go

and that includes dads and kids in the Somerset area, fancy a trip to wales

its a pathetic competition that is a pension fund for players from S Africa and New Zealand

where are the stare from Australia , India and England

yes Duckett and Brook but the big England names ? Root, stokes ,moeen

playing in front of crowds which are thinning out season upon season

its a farce and a waste of money that could have been given to counties to improve their tv coverage, that would inspire kids to go to county grounds

i would worry if you are getting a like by that person who is utterly clueless about any sport as well
The bottom line is if a kid watches a game on the telly and plays with his mates at school and wants to get into cricket and the hundred is on near him of course parents are going to take them.

Rather than give their kid a lecture on what it doing to county cricket.

Especially if the kid hasn’t got a f***ing clue what it is and just wants to get into cricket.

That’s fair enough that my two complaints

1 Not far enough widespread

2 The quality of players no where near what was promised
So why have the 16.4 in six areas of the country and not at the 18 grounds ?

you can’t spread the game if it’s restricted to only six areas and two of those are in London

so four grounds across England is not spreading the game

That’s what I said above one of the problems is not widespread throughout the county it should be

Because Superchargers are the Leeds franchise, not a combined Yorkshire/Durham (though mainly Yorkshire) venture like the Diamonds. The Hundred is only played at the eight home grounds.
That’s not strictly how it came about. On the original schedule for 2020 it was supposed to be a fully Northern thing with all three counties involved and the women’s team intended to play at Riverside and South North. Then they decided to go with the double header thing instead.

I realised that too late

my edit would have mentioned that but it was out of time to do it

this money could have been used to upgrade the counties tv coverage and that would have inspired kids who watch YouTube to then come and experience it live

this crap was the idea of the regime at the FTECB which is long gone

we could have had two ashes tests in august but no we crammed it in , so this bastardisation of the game can be shown

kids inspired by stokes, Woakes, root, moeen smith, starc etc etc or watching David Weise steam in at 75mph and Parnell with his rubbish

It does ‘officially’ represent Durham, just like Southern Brave represent Sussex as well as Hampshire where they play. We know though that they really don’t represent the ‘smaller’ counties.

If memory serves me correctly I think the women were due to play 1 game at South North 2 games at York and 1 obligatory double header at Headingley. But covid scuppered it all and they went with double headers only to maintain the bubbles and it hasn’t reverted to the original plan. I can understand keeping the double headers because it does help the women’s game. There is no reason though they can’t have 1 double header at CLS.

You might be right. Like so much about the 100 it would make no sense to use York instead of CLS, particularly when in the early days they were still paying lip service to the multiple county representation bit, and I was certain about one being in Gosforth and one Leeds and possibly just assumed CLS for the other two. Diamonds have used York for sure.

And I agree with the double header thing and the women’s game. It’s the one positive that’s hard to argue with. The counties have only themselves to blame for being vulnerable to that by being so crap themselves at encouraging the women’s game previously.
For the record your recall is definitely right @Lumley End. Can’t beat analogue sources for events that never happened. I have a 2020 fixture list that shows a double header at Headingley v Manchester, and one home game at South North and two at York. Similarly, away games in Bristol (home game for the Welsh, they’d have loved that in Brizzle 😆) and Derby.

So they were originally going to use the women’s game as a token of regionalism. Then 2020 fell to Covid, 2021 bubbles led to the double headers and here we are.

Great post that.
Speaking of pension fund, was that Ravi Bopara playing last night?

And of course doesn’t do that either any more as that competition is also effectively downgraded by the existence of this one.

That was foreseeable. Exactly what happened when they invented regional franchises in Welsh rugby. No one goes to the club game anymore. But they don’t do the regional stuff either except when they can pretend it’s Swansea v Llanelli still.
They have done more succesfully to the one day cup which has a long tradition in England, what the FA have done over the years to the FA Cup. Devalued it to pap jons status on the altar of some trumped up nonsense that looks like its on its last legs after two seasons.

Well done the ECB.

Oh and how much have these so called improvements cost the game in England?

100% this with bells on.

Please don't talk about 'spreading the game' and getting in 'new fans' when the coverage of this competion is so massively limited geographically. We all know those are just easy throw away statements to justify this rediculaous charade of a competition. It has nothing at all to do with 'spreading the game' and everything to do with trying to increase revenue for the ECB to try and compete with India.

Next the ECB will be telling us the hundred will 'level up' cricket in the UK.

Very good post. The crowds from what I have seen on Sky Sports News look very poor, the organisers will be worried on what is already a massive money loss project for them. For me it's a big worry because the ECB clowns are throwing ridiculous amounts of money at this failure which could have devastating consequences for the game we love and it's even now dictating over test match cricket which we have none of in August. It's a massive concern. London is a big city and their showcase game last night had plenty of empty seats on show. The first game in Leeds today which if we are honest is the closest ground for areas such as Cumbria, Durham, Scotland and of course many parts of Yorkshire......... plenty of empty seats, so any sort of comment suggesting it's capturing people is wide of the mark, it simply isn't and is costing the game a fortune in £££. All of this for the deteriment of county cricket, one day cricket and test match cricket in August, it's absolutely mind blowing stupidity and financial suicide.

Surely the biggest cricket event in England this summer was the ashes? Yet it was crammed into a stupid timeslot to make way for this thing at the height of the summer during the school holidays. Whoever thought this up need sacking very quickly and get some people in charge who understand and respect the history of the sport.

Has a home ashes series ever in history been finished before the start of August?

They have diminishd the T20 Blast, shunted the County Championship which is the breeding ground for our future test players to the edges of the summer, turned the one day cup into low key side show that the media now ignore all to give us this stuff instead covering a tiny percentage of the country. Utter madness.
Hold Back the Rain by Duran Duran being played while it's raining.
When is the final of this shit? Hope it rains continually till the day after that.
