Bid rejected for Clarke

I guess it just depends on if they think they can replace one our best players with a better player or multiple better players with the cash.
It’s bad business not to go up and they’ll know that but if say 15 million gets us Amad’s goals and Clarke’s goals and Stewart’s fee gets us his goals and the next Stewart all is well. I’m so much less worried now, admittedly strikers are our Achilles heel so far into this new world.

So what are you saying really?
It’s to do with what is a ‘par’ season for safc. Last year it was probably survival, or maybe top half. This coming season I’d expect the minimum target is be solidly in the mix for promotion. Nobody at the club will view scraping into the playoffs on the last day with zero expectation as a bit of a bonus this coming season. But equally I doubt they’ll think that they’ve failed if we miss out on automatics. Given our budget is at best top 6-8 in the league we’d be mad to expect top two.

If speakman wants promotion this year no way can we let Clarke go. He also needs to splash the cash on a couple quality players to take us to next level. The fans have bought into the club again let's hope its not a let down this season.
Think you’ve missed the sustainability memo m8, we’ll not be investing decent money unless we generate it by selling our better assets. We haven’t got a fairy godmother or a Saudi one for that matter

We won’t be ‘splashing the cash’ till we stop losing multiple millions of pounds every single season.

15 for him, 15 for Ballard & 10 for Stewart

40m raised from three players that cost a combined total of around 2/3m? Can’t say the model ain’t working.

All replaceable, think some already have been

That's where we differ mate.
Progression from play offs, has to be top 2.
Par for this year is play offs.
Anything less is regression.

I’d struggle to think of a replacement for Clarke if im being honest, imagine it would probably be a loan deal

If a bid of £10m came in for Stewart i’d sell definitely

Yeah, I’m pretty calm at the minute. My arse might start bouncing towards end of the window if we don’t have another striker but I don’t see too many glaring issues at the minute. We probably need to shift a few as it is.

It may well be that selling Clarke allows us to get in a striker we want as well as a Clarke replacement we already have identified and we are hanging on a bit for them to make a suitable offer.

But you’re moving away from the model with your suggestion of what we should do. It’s not all about getting the cheque book out any longer, to be self sufficient we buy cheap, sell for big profit and so on. That includes our best players (more so than the average ones) and it is something we need to accept. Unfortunately.

It doesn’t make sense to think that selling our best players to buy promising youngsters will eventually get us promoted.

We won't be getting £10m for a player with 10 months left on his contract and who only played 13 games last season due to 2 serious injuries.

Burnley have only offered that for a lad who played 50 and has 3 years left on his deal.

Pure speculation, but Clarke out and Cannon, Aravena and Mayenda in (with a bit of cash to spare) could end up being okay. Maybe we get Sarmiento in too. This was always gonna be the ‘less fun’ bit of the process. It’s not something the fanbase has ever had to acclimatise to. Let’s hope it shows promise early. Would hate to see us abandon it at the first sign of choppy waters.
