4th test Manchester

Totally agree and that is why Foakes should keep which is what I have said

But after his performances last year and his heroics for posters to call him ‘ a f***ing con’
and ‘ no backbone’ is way way over the top.

And simply nonsense, not sure why people can’t say what you just said without the need for insults
Yeah, that’s fair, it is way over the top, I think people are getting frustrated as the series is there to win.

I think Jonny unfortunately is past his best, or at best completely out of form. If we look at someone like Wayne Rooney, Michael Owen etc, sportsmen can decline quickly, especially after injuries.

Unfortunately we’re unlikely to see 2022 performances from Bairstow again and the England selectors need to realise that.

Not true that though is it? He's going through a bit of a rough patch but he has 12 test 100s and averages 37.

The Tests against NZ he was brilliant and also scored 2 x 100's against India before this Ashes.

He didn’t keep wicket in any of those games though, that’s what most of the argument is. In the first Test when he got 70 odd, we won the toss and batted first, meaning he hadn’t kept wicket in that game to that point. I don’t know whether it’s a physical thing or a psychological thing but it’s pretty much been accepted that when he keeps his batting suffers.

Yeah I’ve got no problem with him batting, it’s the wicket keeping where I think he needs to be replaced
Yeah that my thoughts too, should have been definitely replaced as keeper.

But as a batsman would have kept him in the side

That and the fact that not sure fully fit to keep and that his confidence seems to have gone keeping big concern imo

My gut feeling is to balance it there as well, but I’m not sure it stands up to logical scrutiny given that he’s been sub par at both in the first three games.

There’s three basic reasons for a dip in performance:
(a) a random loss of form;
(b) a loss of form that’s down to a short term structural factor (most obviously his injury);
(c) a fundamental issue that if you give him the gloves he is incapable of being a decent batter too.

Only if you think his performance suggests the last is true does it make sense to revert to a single role. And there is only some limited evidence of it (his performance with the bat declines from 1st innings to 4th notably when he keeps and Foakes’s doesn’t but Foakes is the statistical freak there).

If you think the second is true he should be dropped completely to get fit. Can’t carry passengers at test level.

If you think the first is true, it’s pretty much settled England policy in the central contracts era not just this management that they don’t chop and change in the middle of a live series just on form so don’t hold your breath.

too much of a risk now, im sure he declared himself 100% for headingley too, be amazed if hes picked
As good as he's been previously he's been useless in this series and he can focus on refinding his ability for whatever our next series is.

India away off the top of my head I believe.
