Roker near Sunderland

Seen this in the press a lot, pic of Roker or Seaburn beach, described as near Sunderland. Or even no mention of Sunderland at all.

Both are very much Sunderland.

Just heard on 6 Music, Whitburn described as Tyneside.

Also quite regular when the biggest place between Edinburgh and Leeds doesnt get a mention on the weather map.

Any others?
Well my photo of penshaw monument got rejected from a Facebook group because I described it as being in Sunderland 🤣, I've always thought it was in Sunderland mind but apparently it's in County Durham, has a DH postcode and had to describe it as near Sunderland. Whitburn is funny one as you literally pass the sign for south Tyneside but it has an sr6 postcode,I've seen several estate agents advertise whitburn homes as being in Sunderland. It's usually anything good we'll claim anything bad we'll pass on

Whitburn is SR6 as it's in the same post town as Sunderland as are Seaham & Murton etc, old Post Office areas from years ago, but strangely enough if you go on Google maps & click on any business etc in Whitburn the listed address will be Whitburn, Sunderland SR6, no mention of South Tyneside, the comp also uses Sunderland in their address on official correspondence.
I think it's a bit like those who still put Sunderland, Co Durham as their address. 😉

The postal town/city is nothing to do where they are, I believe it's off where the post is sorted. Ours is Whitley Bay and we're in Northumberland. It's a canny hack though as if people are stupid I can be in Tyne and Wear or Northumberland if there's exclusive offers for either area.

NE17 which is Chopwell and Blackhall Mill is Newcastle which is a right anomaly -

It will be the mag press, they can’t give any credit to Sunderland

And most of the time cherry pick negative stories about Sunderland

They’re a bunch of wankers

Mental ain't it. It's all a right mess this way. NE25/NE26 are both North Tyneside but a large chunk are in Northumberland, NE23 is the same but the opposite way around.

Northumberland is generally all over the place. Cornmill and Berwick both have Scottish postcodes (TD) which is Galashiels and Otterburn is similarly in Newcastle aswell. Birtley has a Durham post code aswell which some won't like as they're Gateshead and proud

Eh, what site was that. The gonks.
Penshaw is Sunderland, same as Houghton, Washy, Hylton Castle, Roker etc.

Dads army could annex Whitburn in three days man!
There’s a pillbox opposite jolly sailor that’s ready and waiting

Postcodes are based on the old postal districts, they are not relevant to the modern postal system as most of the NE post goes to Team Valley for sorting & then to area distribution centers, our post in SR6, technically South Tyneside is delivered by the Sunderland depot in SR5, the PO do like to confuse things though, the Wearside distribution depot is actually in Follingsby Park which is NE10. You won't find that on Google maps, I only know as I used to pick up stuff for work from there.

Don't forget the pillboxes on Cleadon Hills got a canny field of fire from there to repel the rabble 😂

Aye thought that was the case, knew all NExx was done at the Tyneside Mail Centre.

I know locally most of them are done by their respective areas still though as the next village across has different posties to here as they're done by Cramlington (NE23) whereas we're done by the North Tyneside office (NE25).

I'm surprised they don't totally redraw it as it's a bit all over the place since it was based on areas 50 years ago but then again you'll get moaning I want my old postcode nonsense.

Aye I’ve heard 6 Music describe Nadine Shah as from Newcastle (she’s from Whitburn). You’d think Lauren Laverne would put them right like.
I heard Lauren Lavern once say great soul music got shipped across from america to the great coastal musical cities of Liverpool and Newcastle. It really bugged me, surely Newcastle cannot be classed as a coastal city ,or even a great musical city.

Sounds like another "chip on the shoulder" thread that some on here seem to have about our glorious City.
Yes but when it goes the other way absolute meltdown on Tyneside. Thread on here about local radio and I reckon BBC Newcastle should be merged with Teesside and just have BBC North East but the mags would kick off but chips on shoulders if other way.

That knacker who has 15 kids to 13 different lasses that he meets at bus stops was a Washington mag, but always got labeled as being from Sunderland
The Sunderland Shagger Keith McDonald. Often pictured in a gravy stained barcode top.
