Moeen Ali offered Ashes return

Well good luck Mo, hoping we’re proved wrong but I don’t think someone who had to think about taking a place in an ashes team should be in

He might have said yes immediately. Just because there was no press announcement until today doesn't mean he's been thinking about it. There could be committments elsewhere he needed to sort, contractual stuff, ECB might have needed to speak to other contracted players or alternative choices to explain their rationale.

Yeah.

I don’t think it disappears. But the crowds just don’t sustain it. I’m guilty as I always mean to go more, and I rarely do
Guilty as charged there for me as well, although after asking on here yesterday and someone mentioning charging the lap top in the Sticky Wicket, i may have the opportunity to "work" from there when the county game gets back into the swing of things

Think that's a really poor decision and a slap in the face to county players

This. Not happy with this at all, if he takes loads of wickets and scores loads of runs I’ll be delighted of course, but it’s a massive slap in the face of lads like Ahmed and Parkinson who should’ve been ahead of him in the pecking order.

A weeks notice. Sensible decision going with an experienced head who knows the team and has been there and done it before.
This for me too. Anyone else is probably too much of a gamble.

Ahmed has 22 FC wickets. Livingstone and Jacks are part timers.

Dawson would have been a perfectly sensible pick. But he's nowhere near experienced playing top level cricket as Moeen.

Says in the BBC article he had a “couple of days to reflect”

That would be a fair argument if there were any world class alternatives.

But that is my argument, if Moen is not world class in the test arena which he is not, why not give the leggie a go and back those players who want to play test cricket for England

Parkinson can't even get a game for Lancashire

Ahmed is 18 as much as he's the sort of character that could end up thriving just as likely to destroy him. He's had a fair bit of tap this season in red ball when I've looked at scorecards.

One thing them chucking him in as a second spinner after your 2 nil up in 3 match series. Then making him the frontline spinner at the beginning of an Ashes series were desperate to win.

One thing this does tell us is that once again there is no depth in the spinning department. Somewhat understandable given conditions in the UK are rarely conducive to developing top-class spinners, but other than a promising Ahmed, the options are currently depressing.

We scoff at times at how bad England were in the 90's, but had the options this time around been of the level of Tufnell, Croft, Giles, Batty, Min Patel etc we'd have been better off!

Barely bowled and barely batted aside from hit and giggle stuff. Obviously the injury to leach was unfortunate but our preparation going into a significant test series is really poor

Hmmm not sure myself, however it is extremely short notice and there’s not exactly an outstanding list of candidates. Everyone mentioned has a downside for picking, Moeen is no different.

Fingers crossed it works

Think only Dawson could be reasonably dissapointed at being overlooked for Mo.

Everyone else was either a batter who bowls or not ready to bowl in these conditions/pressure environment.

Can see Mo thriving under Stokes and then he might want to stay on till India next year.

Which then bodes the question of is it another nail in the coffin of the County Red Ball game. Quite a sad thought really

I don’t think this is fair like

Ali played county cricket for over a decade

It’s the right call, pick your best side.

It’s 10 days before the start, Ahmed n Jacks aren’t ready

People seem to try and turn every selection into a referendum on county cricket

Every single members of this team came through county cricket and played it for years

On Ali it’s just a question of if he can still get the fizz on the ball, he’s got nearly 200 wickets, he was a good bowler, underated.

It’s worth ago with 4 left handers for them too

There’s no way they could play in the ashes mind, Parkinson isn’t even in Lancashire team and Ahmed has struggled to land it at times

It’s international sport like, pick your best team to win

Mo Ali played county cricket for over a decade learning his skill
It’s hardly new. Buttler and Rashid both got picked whilst playing no red ball cricket

Ahmed got picked after 3 first class games, nobody seemed to think that was a “slap in the face for county cricket”
Leach is a huge miss, not replaceable really, this is only for first 2 tests

It’s sensible like have a look csn always move on

Every selection issue england have got right so far, nasser was talking about it that every player they have brought in has delivered.

People need to have more faith, I’m constantly amazed at the negativity on here considering he’s won 11 out of 13

We’d won 1 in 17 before that!!!

He also hasn't played first class cricket for 2 years, and left because he was consistently poor will ball and bat for a year. We are now expecting him to come back and bowl a huge chunk of overs against one of the best test sides with no match practice in the longer format. He may have played the format for 10 years but he was rightly moved on from due to his performances, he was also always more of a batting alrounder
