Bid rejected for Clarke

It's the way to get good quality players for little up front cost though. Takes pretty much all of the risk out of the purchase, and if we sell him for £20m then we'd be making £10m on him.

We've done similar deals to get the likes of Roberts and Ekwah on free transfers.
But there'd be plenty of risk. This is a lad with 25 goal contributions the season just gone. Even with that money in the bank, it would be hard to recruit someone to do that. We've already lost 18 from Amad

As I said last week, the club are starting to leak bits and pieces now in the hope that it won't have as big a reaction when he is sold as it won't have come out of the blue.

Its clear he'll be off and this drip-feeding will only increase over the coming days/weeks.

He's gone, it's a matter of when not if.
If the club are trying to manage expectations and prepare the fans for Clarke being sold then reminding us of his goal contributions on social media and putting up his highlights reel to remind us of how good and important he is to us seems a strange way to go about it.

Clarke being sold

Fee hasn’t even been agreed for Bellingham

Triantis still has 2 year left and loves the Mariners

Semedo brother hassled on insta by our daft support and confirms it’s off.

Aravena costs too much.

Wow how can this all unravel in just a couple of days :(

That is all just speculation. There is a definite chance he will be here next season. However, if the fee is over £20M it gives us a massive chance to buy in 3 or 4 top quality players. Of course we want to keep Jack and I'm sure he'd be happy to stay but given the confidence that we now have in our recruitment team the selling of one top star for £20M+ could be a catalyst for a real go at promotion.

But there’s no future transfer % involved iirc Man City terminated his contract early
They didn't terminate his contract. They just agreed not to demand any up front fee.

It was reported that Man City could make up to £3m on the deal, which like Clarke is based on sell on fee rather than performance add-ons.

Roberts was out of contact. He's 100 percent ours

Yep. Just people attempting to read the tea leaves and pretend they’ve got it all figured out.

The article makes no sense either. If he we got him signed to a new deal, we’d only get a bigger fee for him should we sell.

Touched on this yesterday but such public interest just puts pressure on the club with his contract situation. He’s got another three years here so if we offer another deal now it would be pretty much only be too increase his wage over a similar term anyway to stop his head being turned which would be a wage increase that would be best used in other areas.

Transfer fee if he were to go wouldn’t be much different if he still has a similar period left on his deal and if he’s happy here an increase might not be warranted anyway so all it does it has us paying higher wages at a time when it shouldn’t really be needed, making him the highest earner if he isn’t already (maybe by a considerable distance) which then has a knock on effect to other players or interest in them.

I can’t imagine we want to uplift his wages at this stage with so long still left on his contract and if he’s happy here then it shouldn’t be such an issue usually.

However bids from other clubs, with agents in the press saying the price/package needs to be right making a decision on it come to a head and puts pressure on/influences a decision on a new deal and it would probably be the right decision not to uplift his wage right now tbh.
