The Safety of Fans in the North Stand

Strange club can do something straight away regarding flags with a rude meaning on them

yet can they bollix find a solution to this & they’ve had over a year to sort it

typical Sunderland
At the last supporter's meeting they turned the conversation about the away fans chucking stuff and being moved into a conversation about the behaviour of home fans chucking stuff.....

"The club has been placed on FA Report 6 times this season (SD). 3 of these reports have been for missiles thrown at the pitch at the Stadium of Light by home fans, 2 reports related to behaviour by SAFC fans away from home and 1 report related to missiles thrown by Burnley fans at the Stadium of Light. The total number of missiles thrown by home supporters on the above 3 reports is over 15. The most missiles thrown at any one match is 9, thrown at the Fulham FA Cup replay match. Objects include vapes, coins, plastic bottles, plastic cups, a toy rubber dog, and a bingo dabber. Objects are mainly thrown from North Stand Lower and South Stand. There are ongoing investigations into offenders from 4 incidents captured on CCTV.

These reports only represent the number of incidents reported by match officials - the actual number of missiles thrown by Sunderland fans at the Stadium of Light is significantly higher. Most recently at the Sunderland v Bristol City match, there were 4 incidents of missile throwing at the pitch by Sunderland fans which were not noted by the match officials, these missiles were thrown from the South Stand and North Stand Lower and included a glass bottle. The club has been warned by the league about the behaviour of our supporters. Sunderland is not the only club facing such problems. SD raised the issue because it needs to be addressed or the club will face fines and / or restrictions on allocations at home and away games"

knew we’d end up getting the blame somehow I absolutely despise that Tory spiv

Flares, coins and a bottle was thrown from hull fans towards the north lower on Friday.

There seems to be with every bigger away following missiles thrown towards home fans

To be fair there's a lot more involved in sorting one than the other
It would be nice if the various measures they introduced stopped the incidents and everyone could crack on .
It reminds me of bars I'm in where I think what happens if a pint goes over here onto them down there .

loadabolic curves by the sound of it, at best from the middle of the north upper to the middle of the north lower will be no more than 50 ft and taking parabolic curves out of the equation as forward momentum will be overridden by gravity then the solution is two fold, 1 move the away supporters, 2 put up a f***ing net/screen
Any form of lateral movement on the projectile will form a parabolic curve when thrown. Without any form of lateral movement, the object will go up in the air and hit the away fan on his own head. There is no way gravity can override lateral momentum.

I agree with your solution though - one of those needs to happen before someone is killed

It will 100% end the risk of objects being thrown from a distance above peoples head. That's a fact. And it will seriously reduce the risk of injury or worse going forward.. How people like yourself and others fail to see this is beyond me

If you read my other replies I appreciate that, my concern is the lack/poor policing and stewards, the club also needs to punish club with smaller allocation

What the club need to do is move the Aways to the lower bowl regardless of what the costs might be. It's the only logical explanation. Who knows what might have happened had the smoke bomb made it's way to the home fans. The club are extremely lucky it didn't. There's no defending the club whatever way you look at it.

Im not defending the club im critising the club and police, im sick of away coming here thinking they can take the piss, regardless of where they sit this will continue until club acts. Moving them for starters will help, but there’s definitely more they can do

Cctv & a lifelong ban from every ground should sort it. There again, some people are so thick maybe not.
No it won’t.
Fair comment, although banning orders have prevented people in the past with hooligans.

Just think people pelting things from above when there are families etc below is disgusting & it could cause serious injury.

They should chuck the book at the perpatrators
A prison sentence is no consolation to a victim with life changing injuries. Nor is the compensation from during safc.

That is true and obviously prevention is preferable - and after the Hull match when a flare was thrown it is pretty clear that searching away fans is not an effective option.

Objects - flares, bottles, coins and vapes seem to be raining down on fans in the lower bowl from a great height on a regular basis.

Ok it’s a rough estimate but allowing for 40 lower bowl rows and 20 upper bowl rows(?) with 0.5m vertical reach per seat these objects could be coming down a vertical distance of 30m before hitting someone pitch side.

That after having been initially hurled with enough force to clear a balcony that could be over 20m away.

Am sure there are engineers on here capable of calculating the force with which a glass bottle thrown from the back of the upper tier would hit someone’s head pitchside but to me it is clearly not beyond possibility that the victim would be dead.

Isnt it time for the club to do something now before the worst happens?

Money is their god marra. They’ve no interest in anything else.

Maybe the South Stand could have a F*ck The Missiles banner with the F, T & M in bold and highlight the issue whist getting around the true meaning of FTM?

And before anyone thinks I’m making light of the issue I’ve made my feelings known at the Ticket Office when wanting to move due to the BCB changes without consultation. I made it clear I wouldn’t go anywhere else
In the North Stand due to H&S issues (the BCB seats are safe as they are under the over hand of the upper tier).

In that case they might want to seek advice about their liability for damages should the worst happen

Not that this would be much use to any victim of course
They’re not uk citizens so I think they believe this clouds the water a bit. Or they’re so rich and arrogant that they won’t listen to advice.

Our esteemed CEO Mr Davison comes from an engineering background, although why anyone would have any confidence in him doing the right thing. Only a matter of time because a serious injury happens due to Davisons negligence.

Or they need to spend a few hours thinking about what the ability of someone to smuggle a flare into the upper tier and then throw it - almost clearing the balcony - says about the current safety measures they have put in place.

The nationality of the owners and operators of the stadium will make absolutely no difference to their liability for failing to ensure they take reasonable measures to ensure the safety of spectators in a public arena in which they are selling seats

And if money is the only issue they would hardly walk away from an asset worth tens of millions to avoid paying compensation that might possibly run to £1-2 million?

And to repeat none of this would be any value to a victim if the worst happens of course

Time to do something now.

Exactly. It's only a matter of when, not if. If they have taken no action following glass bottles being thrown from that height in August and here we are in April with large and dangerous items still being thrown down then when will they? When said injuries occur, is the answer.

Turning it round to a rubber dog toy on the pitch in order to have a go at their own fans for fuck's sake.

For what it is worth this gives some alarming results if you assume it is roughly 30m vertical distance from the top of the north stand to pitchside

Am sure there are better qualified engineers on here though to make sense of this
