What was your expectations when McMenemy first took charge?

I thought we’d win the league easily, think we lost the first 4 games without scoring a goal then we were losing to Grimsby at Roker , I’ve never heard booing like it just before Swindlehurst scored on the stroke of half time then we conceded straight from the restart! Finished 3-3. I was a teenager then and it still took another couple of months before I could admit Mackemenemy was shite.
Almost sure that was a Full Members cup tie.

Still got all the little newspaper cuttings in a scrapbook. I remember how demoralising it was just flicking through the scrap book seeing defeat after defeat for a fair few pages and not even any goals.
Also very little footage exists of this season as far as I can see. Think I've only seen the two Man Utd cup games and randomly Norwich away near the end of the season and also think a friendly away to Darlo pre season.

Expectations were to win the league.

I was in Benidorm when the 1st few results starting filtering through.
Think we lost all 5 in a fortnight. 😕

Do remember a little run when we beat Carlisle away and Boro home and I thought here we go , get ready for lift off.

Then it just got worse.

I was chuffed to blazes, thought the good times would be a given. My dad said on the day it was announced (made national TV) it would be a disaster. Called him a lower league manager who had got lucky at Southampton.

5 games into the season. 5 defeats & no goals scored.....................last time I argued football with my dad.
Seamus McDonough. f***ing hell

This thread brings it all back for me just how bad those days were, from the initial hope & belief to where the club ended up that took some time to recover from - if we have. His legacy on how to ruin a club worked. Over a beer in S'ton a few local llads said that Peter Rodrigues was the person that dictated the team and how they played which all became evident in time.

I'm rarely widely optimistic or pessimistic. I just thought well we've got a decent manager on paper let's see how it goes.

I hate the bloke, absolute fraud.

When stationed at Lee on the Solent I used to go and watch Portsmouth and Southampton and had high hopes that he would be a good fit for us. Those hopes were soon dashed.

McMenemy didn't actually relegate us. Stokoe had plenty games to keep us up.
f***ing hell, I can't believe I've read that on here.

After "Big Mac" (who turned out to be more of a chicken nugget) had been given two seasons to fuck the place over signing shite players to a squad now bereft of any confidence or established style of play, you'd expect someone to come in with a few games left and turn all that around?

But the capabiliities of what was left by Lawrie made it very unlikely. Mc relegated us.
Proctor missed vital penalties against Barnsley in the last game and then the home leg of the play offs. Bradford City beat us twice 3-2 within a fortnight or so. We were relegated on away goals counting double. All what ifs, buts and maybes. Stokoe in my view is beyond blame.

There is lots of coverage of games on Internet eg play off at Sunderland against Gillingham.
