CC :: Sussex v Durham

It is but capacity is only 6000 so depending on how many members they have mightn't have been that many freebies available.
It's quite a popular venue for Durham members. Been there a few times but never occurred to me to buy tickets in advance
Probably doing well to get over a 1,000 on a normal county day. If they get 4,000 it will probably be the highest attendence of the season for a championship match.

Which bit especially do you disagree with? We’ve got quality and depth at all batting positions in my view, that’s the angle I’m taking.

Bowling attack looks fragile and frail, I concede that.

First let me repeat: im excited and optimistic for the season.

However a big part of that is how much alot of our players have to prove. Especially in bowling but looking at the batting "as strong as its ever looked with a lot of depth"

Lees - will he be available all season due to england?

Jones - one great season behind him, will he kick on, repeat or regress? And will he miss time due to Scotland?

Borthwick - a former run machine struggling to repeat early career success for many years. Fingers still crossed for him

Bedingham - a poor year last year by his (very high) standards, possbly down to injury? What will we get this year?

Robinson - new(ish) to the team, looks a great signing on paper.

Bushnell (?) - hopefully this season sees him turn his potential into a regular and dependable first teamer hopefully with bat and ball and in all formats

Trevaskis/Clark/MacKintosh - in my mind theyre fighting for 7th spot in the lineup and all have shown flashes of quality, and all reasonably dependable in their respective fields.

McKinney, Crawshaw - unless im forgetting anyone these two unproven lads are the depth (along with two of the above) and may they spend some time with england u19s? I dont know how fixtures tie in with domestic games.

Loads of potential, will be exciting to see who fulfills theirs, and how well but i just feel like its a bit hyperbolic to call it strong as its ever been and deep when alot is still to prove.

The tail looks potentially very strong mind depending on who plays between the likes of coughlin and carse v macalindon, gibson etc. No idea what either of the aussies look like or if we'll see the all rounder potential of potts this year

Have just been looking at the Most Runs stats for last season and you have to go quite a way down the list to find a Durham name. And yes Jones' average was 51, which is usually not to be sneezed at, but last season was the year of flat pitches and bowlers, with a few exceptions, finding it very difficult.

I don't think div 2 is as strong as last season and i doubt anybody will bully the opposition the way Notts did last season.

Most of the previews I’ve read/listened to seem to think Glamorgan will be the team to beat this season - however they were in Zimbabwe when we were and played the same opposition and didn’t fare anywhere near as well as we did* - but I wasn’t at all impressed by them the twice we played them. They performed much better against the other sides of course and they are a very strong side on paper and a team I consider to definitely be a contender.

The bookies unsurprisingly have Yorkshire as favourites, but nobody knows how they’ll fare, most sides will see them as the prize scalp and I expect they’ll get the best effort of every team they play. As always they’ll have to cope with several players being away with England, they may benefit early season from having Bairstow around as he tries to prove his fitness for the Ashes, but a number of sides who have dropped down have found it isn’t as easy in D2 as they expected/hoped and so 6/4 (to win the Division) is ridiculously short. Personally, I wouldn’t take anything less than 2/1 merely for promotion.

Sussex are the bookies second favourite, but they’ll need to do a better job of taking 20 wickets than they did last year. A combination of a young/inexperienced bowling attack and flat pitches didn’t help them but I think it’s fanciful to have them at just 9/2 considering that attack is only a year older - even with the early season boost of having Robinson available.

The odds in full are:

Yorkshire 6/4
Sussex 9/2
Glamorgan 5/1
Gloucestershire 8/1
Durham 9/1
Worcestershire 9/1
Derbyshire 12/1
Leicestershire 20/1

Derbyshire are a good price, a few people have had good words to say about their prospects - they’ve got one of the best coaches in county cricket in Micky Arthur.

Will Paul Nixon’s Leicestershire avoid the wooden spoon?
*I appreciate they’ve got players to add to the side that travelled over there mind you, as have we…

If Massood plays like he did last season he'll be a real boon to Yorkshire's batting line up. Don't know what their bowling attack is like these days, just Fisher and Bess?

Looking forward to the season and hoping to get to a good few games (Already booked up for a week in Whitby when we play Yorkshire in Scarborough).

No idea what to expect, think we are light in most areas tbh but strong individual seasons may carry us through.

Yes,don't think Gloucs and Yorkies are as strong as the 2 promoted counties. Nor can I understand how the bookies make Sussex and Yorkies favourites for promotion, then Glamorgan. I reckon we're stronger than any of those if we can keep our strongest XI fit. It's the lack of depth, particularly in bowling, that's my only concern.

It is Good Friday and Sussex are giving out free tickets I beieve.
Borthwick will miss this game, may miss others due to a broken finger.
My mate's going for all 4 days. He got tickets in advance (for the first three) and he thought Sussex had made a mistake for Friday.
I'll probably go Thursday and was thinking of Friday, so was a bit surprised to see it sold out. Might go Saturday.
Have to admit though, will find it hard to spend 7 hours watching cricket if it's only 10 degrees. Pathetic, I know.

I think the first block of matches are vital they probably always are. Hopefully with decent luck with the weather Durham can be right in the mix.

It’s a very good point, we play 6 games in the first 6 weeks of the season before the T20’s start - just short of half the campaign, so it’ll be vital to get off to a very good start. England don’t play until early June, so it’s possible we’ll have Potts for that time, it’s probably fanciful to hope we’ll see anything of Stokes, but they may want Wood to bowl and prove his durability ahead of the Ashes.

Yeah no way we see Stokes at all this season given his injury and current bowling issues, the IPL and the Ashes. I expect him to hardly play at all once the IPL is finished up to the Ashes. If they think he needs a bit match practice, we might get him for one Championship game.

Not sure how Sussex are so highly rated tbh.

Their batting looks absolutely class, with some exceptional young talent being led by Pujara, BUT, as mentioned, their bowling has a lot to prove.
The way we often bat in recent seasons, the bonus point change is going to hurt us I reckon.

I’m not a fan of it I must say. If they’re wanting to promote ‘positive cricket’ why not keep it at 200-400 but just drop the overs to 100.

Looks like with Borthwick's apparent absence there is two places up for grabs at number 3 and 6 in the batting order.
Fully expect a four man pace attack of Potts, Carse, Raine and Coughlin with Kuhnemann as the spin option.
As far as batting goes Lees and Jones to open with Bedingham and Robinson at 4 and 5.

Lees
Jones
Mckinney /Clark
Bedingham
Robinson
Mckinney / Clark/ Bushnell / de Leede
Coughlin
Carse
Raine
Potts
Kuhnemann.

Don't really know anything about de Leede so would quiet like to see Mckinney at 3 and Bushnell at 6 although i get a feeling they will play Clark.

Yes agree with most of that although not sure a 4 man frontline pace attack is necessary now that we have a spinner who presumably can at least provide economy for much of the time at one end with Bushnell/de Leede filling as 4th seamer. Carse pre-season doesn’t merit selection imo.
