Marco no longer lives in the area, not a good thing for a local pundit.

His location may be a factor but the fact he rarely attends games, infrequently watches the full 90 minutes, bases his opinions on highlights and seems massively ill-informed are more significant IMHO. (These are facts admitted by him on air over the years he’s been on).

I don’t always agree with pundits, after all it is all about opinions but I would expect any pundit to at least have a decent appreciation of facts, figures and anecdotal information about the team they comment upon. He’s just not good enough.

You're right...but most of those negative points are BECAUSE he lives outside the region (not attending games, not watching 90 minutes etc, etc). He is a good name, but that's all.
To be delivering informed opinion the BBC should have an ex-player who has seen the action first hand.

He lives in York doesn’t he ? - hardly a difficult travel and perhaps says much about his commitment. It says a lot about BBC Radio Newcastle too - prepared to accept a poorly motivated, poorly prepared pundit - obvious to anyone who listens.

Not a fan of Barnes I think he's dreadful.
In my view he's not dreadful; he does his research, conducts reasonable pre-match and post-match interviews ...but his commentary is average and not always the best at painting a picture of the game with his words. But, as a combination, the Barnes-Benno duo's biggest problem is their inability to keep stum when the other is talking. The listener is bombarded with unintelligible verbiage whenever there's a goal or dramatic incident because Benno is screaming over Barnes or vice versa.

I rarely tune in these days, even with the good run we've been on, or a Monday after a win I don't bother because I know that Marco will usually start by saying he didn't catch the game, but seen some highlights. It's not good enough really and it probably shows that BBC Newcastle themselves give little care to the SAFC aspect of the show.

I find Barnes very irritating comes out with loads of pointless stuff that's not actually relevant to the game he's watching.

Slightly unfair KB, I was listening from 7.10 and he was explaining he’d like him to contribute more, runs, holding ball up but realised early days. He needs a goal to get his confidence going.
KB, who is normally a decent poster, clearly has an agenda against Marco….

I never understand this “doesn’t live in the area” “does attend the games” shite.

Do Shearer Lineker etc “live in the area” and “attend every game” to be pundits on Match of the Day et or are people saying they are shite too?????????

He probably sees more than a lot of the posters on here who don’t go but still express opinions etc

Yea it’s early days but entirely not of his own making Gelhardt has been poor.

I listened for a bit last night - marco was insisting it wasn’t a penalty and arguing with Barnes about it

With streaming though there’s no excuse any more for not watching the games

I certainly won't be listening to this tonight it will be a skunk cup final love in and they'll be wetting themselves about the possibility of Marcus Rushford missing the match on Sunday.
