Striker situation

I was on the match thread so you can't be stalking me that well now can you. The issues aren't going away, much as you'd like them too and sadly it seems the only striker they did sign isn't what we need. We're yet to play the more difficult sides, watch our position drop and it'll be more 1 yesr ago threads to try to cover up huge mistakes in the squad building.

Possibly, but doesn't look likely this season. Which is why we brought him in.

Not even one apology.
Why the heck should he apologise?

We have identified strikers Simms, Nemeth, Geldhart, Archer etc that we know of. I won’t however judge Speakman on how many strikers he signs. I’m only interested in Speakman delivering improvement year on year. We have made phenomenal progress this year and its up him to do the same next year. We will definitely need to sign strikers in the summer for another season of progression and if we don’t and the club regresses because if it then he deserves criticism.
Being linked isn't enough. Football is a results business and in this area we've no positive results. We've chased loan players all window and it looks like we've brought in a player that doesn't suit our style of play and nothing else. During that time we managed to bring in a defender and 2 midfielders so it is possible to bring players in. On the summer, people said we'd defiantly bring players in up front this window or last summer, it didn't happen. We'll just have to wait and see but its a worrying trend which I'm not yet certain will change.

I'm just saying you are like a cracked record repeating the same point week after week. Do you have anything fresh to say or will you just repeat the same point everytime we donn't win?
Something wrong with him marra, I reckon he wakes up in the middle of the night screaming about it. I have said this previously, we had a bloke in Dawdon club, who had his own seat, and would sit there with a pint, saying the same thing over and over, this lad has to be a relative

Canny how the threads have slowly gone from:
"We don't have a striker so we'll struggle this season"
"We don't have a striker so we won't even finish midtable"
"We don't have a striker so we won't reach the playoffs"

to the OP's current one of "We don't have a striker so we'll struggle in the playoffs"

It's almost as if we can play without a striker.

Hopefully it gets to "We wouldn't have needed that win at Wembley as with a striker we would have been in the top 2"

Managers and players apologise all of the time for poor performance. Like it or not there's been poor performance in striker recruitment for 2 years. You may not agree but many do.
Would an apology be enough for you to move on do you reckon?

I reckon you are in the massive minority for expecting a sorry either way. It would look and sound ridiculous. It's not a us and them surely? We are all in this together.

Ellis Simms this window gone was reminiscent of borini, too focussed on one player to the detriment of the team.

At least we got another winger and a centreback though 🤷‍♀️

It'd be a start. The club haven't even acknowledged there's a huge problem. Head in the sand mentality certainly won't help.

Only fixing the problem would be enough.

I'm pretty sure they've been public about regret and disappointment about failing to get a replacement CF during the window. That's enough of an apology for me like.

Still think it was very poor and I'm still pissed off/gutted about the situation we left ourselves in.

Football is a results based business and our results over the last year have been excellent, far better than most expected and that is down to excellent recruitment. They missed out on signing their centre forward targets and were very successful in other areas and the team has made tremendous progress on the whole because of the signings they have made. If you are right and the trend does continue and progress regresses as a result then you have a point. In fact even now raising it as a point of discussion is reasonable but not as the absolute outrage against a recruitment team that have on the whole done a brilliant job and have the results to back that up

What benefit would it be for the club to keep mithering on about having a lack of strikers to choose from? How's about they carry on being positive along with their excellent performances and results?

They have but they haven't repeated it enough publicly it seems. Might be worth saying how weak we are up front after every game so the lads trying their best feel more worthy. Young Joffy would surely love it for starters?

The interview with KS, which I've posted twice in recent days would suggest otherwise. He even states he was happy with just 2 strikers (one of them a loan) for the remainder of the season. We'll never progress to where we want to be if we're lending player in key positions. As you've pointed out loan players mentality can be very different to those who have signed long term deals and bought into out club.

I reckon some fans would rather we lost games, played shit football but at least signed a boatload of centre forwards 🤷‍♂️

Results far better then expected, maybe by you but not all. Not getting out of league one was a stain on our history and total mismanagement. Gaining promotion was the bare minimum expectation of last season, as it should be for this. We're in the championship not champions league. A club of our size with the resources we have should be expected to get results in this league.

I've gone on record many many times praising recruitment in defence and midfield. Theres a glaring omition in recruitment which cannot be ignored. Those wanting to fall over themselves to praise the club need to see that all good work falls flat if we don't support the manager to give him ALL the tools he needs to achieve.

Keep mithering on 😆 Acknowledging the problem of their own making would be a start. They could then move on and spin it in the way they wish to. If the players view this board and their confidence is shattered beyond repair perhaps football isn't the sport for them. Or is it the fans fault we've no centre forward.

Since Stewart got nacked, we’ve got 7 points in three games?

And we’re in the play-offs.

We drew a game, calm down.
We've played 2 sides in the bottom half, one of which has sacked their manager. Look at the bigger picture. We've some better sides to come when it'll be much harder to get results. Look at what happened last time RS was injured, picked up some results initially then dropped. If it doesn;t happen now great, as thats what we all want, but to pretend we don't have serious issues up front is beyond madness.

Without wishing to get drawn into an an argument over recruitment and players we haven't got, I have been trying to think of possible options we could use to maybe change things up a little and give Gelhardt some support.

Obviously we went 442 against QPR with Clarke up front, Ba and Roberts as the wide men which worked, is that the best option we have apart from our usual 4231? I don't think Amad up top with Gelhardt would work as Amad doesn't strike me as one that would run the channels like Clarke did.

The biggest thing i think we need to look at is playing more direct down the channels for Geldhardt to run onto, rather than the short, quick interplay through the midfield? That would keep the shape the team are comfortable with and possibly bring the best out of Gelhardt?
