Striker situation

It’s just a dull discussion. There’s nowt else to add. Everyone accepts we are short it’s just whether you are outraged or philosophical. We have 7 points from the last 9 and everytime we don’t get 3 points is there really going to be a thread like this? We are short up front, our star striker got injured more or less on deadline day and we didn’t get a ‘Brian Deane’ type in. It may well cost us in the same way the very many utterly brilliant signings they have made have got us where we are.

I disagree - it needs highlighting each time it's clear we're lacking it, as despite being short for most of last season and despite being short earlier this season the message clearly didn't hit home hard enough.

Tbh I've barely mentioned it but there are still some offering their excuses which range from how well we've done in some games (like yourself), to singling out individuals like Hume today blaming him for one indiscretion when the whole team is affected by the lack of a striker and the midfielders and especially defenders in games today more so when the ball doesn't stick up front, which has put them under pressure on more occasions.

Then we keep hearing absolute codswallop from Speakman in interviews about not needing a similar type of player to Stewart in terms of the big number 9, when that's pretty much what we had as cover earlier in the season and it's absolutely what we lack now.

Also I made the Brian Deane comment as a physical presence as an option for occasions like today where the ball didn't stick or where opposition defences were having it too easy etc. Naturally you would want better, younger cover, but after today I'm not sure how you can pour scorn on the idea.

You seem to be another who has just accepted that no criticism can be made of Speakman and the recruitment team because they've progressed us and we're better than we were. That's like the ridiculous arguments that used to go on in the Reid days when every man and his dog could see it was turning to shit, but many didn't want to criticise as it was the best they'd known.

I may have mentioned this once or twice last month

Sadly the striker they did bring in doesn't look up to it. We've no out ball and can't reply on Clarke scoring worldies twice a week. I realistically gave up on playoffs at start of this month but hoped we could somehow get enough results to sneak it (we may still as its tight and there are games left). We've Burnley and Norwich away and Sheff United at home, I see those better sides causing us more problems that the likes of Reading and QPR, Coventry won't be an easy game either. The worry is teams work us out and as we've no plan B we drop points as we did earlier in season.

You certainly weren’t around midweek that’s for sure.
Then the first page of this thread and throughout it jumping on someone dari g to mention we didn't look great up front today.

Even now, there are the "we know" comments etc, how can you discuss the game properly if the striker situation is off limits

What's to debate? We are short because we didn't get another body in and Stewart got injured. 100% of the fans know this. The only difference is that some fans are ouraged by this and some aren't so much but even thats been discussed to death. There is no new angle that anyone can give that hasn't been said already. Whats the lpint if we win our next two again and then have a draw of moaning on about the striker situation when theres nothing new to add?

Maybe debate how we could line up? Where things could be changed?

Like normal people would after a disappointing draw

So who is your Brian Deane equivalent that we could have signed last minute? Its my view anyway that we would be a poorer side with that tyoe of player unless they are of really good quality which we werent going to get in the last 24 hours. During the window we were trying to get Simms, trying at get Nemeth, trying to get Geldhart and had Stewart. There was a whole combination of factors such as Lampards sacking, Stewarts injury and yes a reluctance to get a last minute Chris Martin type that has us where we are (which is of course in an incredible position given the efforts of the recruitment team in the last year) As i've said before I'm quite shicked at a small minority of fans (you included tbf) moaning about it.

We were short even with Stewart fit. Earlier in the season also showed it was a possibility he could pick up a long term injury and he wasn't superhuman.

Not bringing in another out and out striker might just have been a catastrophic decision and they need to learn from it and it'll get mentioned everytime we don't win - not sure why you think that is wrong or why you expect anything else, just because you don't like hearing it.
