The previous time they were in the championship 5 years earlier and won the league with 102 points, their average attendance was 43,000 which isn't bad but that is still 12k empty seats.

Weren’t a lot of their fans tied into that 10 or so year season ticket too iirc?

A couple of lads at work were on it at the time. They weren't tied into it as such but they got a discount for being on it and if they cancelled and then took on a new season ticket they would lose their discount. I'd imagine it would be illegal to force fans to buy a season ticket!

Ah right makes sense. I know a lad and his dad who were on it and it was ridiculously cheap iirc. I imagine we would also have a pretty good take up were that an option here

Only because there are bigger grounds though. Tyneside is a breeding ground for football fantatics. You also have Northumberland to the north. Although it isn't particularly heavily populated most of them, bar a few places like Ashington and Cramlington where there may be a few red & whites, get drawn into supporting Newcastle. County Durham used to be red and white with the more northerly towns like CLS being 50:50. Since Keegan they are far higher profile.

Newcastle would get higher attendances with a bigger stadium. Especially now it looks like they've quietly gone about competing for a CL place. A shrewd, non-glamourous manager who gets the basics right and the rest follows. A bit of luck, a lot of confidence and (unfortunately) I've no doubt they will be up around 4th or 5th at the end of the season.

Doesn't bear thinking about once the money starts really getting spent with regular CL football and title challenges. The amount of potential fans we will be haemorrhaging to them in the next 20 years will be obscene.

Still.... just as I did not watch a single second of the World Cup, I'd have walked away if I was a mag. Owned by Saudi. That is utterly repulsive.

Aye, 100% the 51k was Benitez being there and their weird hero worshipping for his mediocre football. First game of the season for the 2009/10 season was an attendance of 36k with 3k of that being away fans. If they struggled that season they wouldn’t have passed 40k for a game, unless it was the Boro game at a push.
 
We are far from the finished article, but we're gradually getting towards where we want & need to be.

We're well shot of the piss takers & lead swingers, like Grigg, Graham & Rodwell, who held us back, and did nothing but steal a living from our club.

We now have a squad of committed, young & very talented players, who all contribute to playing the exciting football we now play, which is a universe away from the hoofball of recent seasons, and we're so much more than just holding our own & making up the numbers in this division.

We are competitive, exciting to watch, and are good enough to sustain a play off challenge.
This is reflected in our increased home attendances.

There's so much to be happy, positive, & very optimistic about right now, at SAFC.
 
We have the biggest attendances & away following is superb & we do stick with the team every week.

Best supported? Nobody left in the ground hardly for the last 10-15 mins is the only qualm.

It’s like anything in life.

I wouldn’t pay 2 quid to watch a shit film, I’d pay £10 to watch a good one.

I wouldn’t drink £4 wine, but I’d drink 2 bottles at a 10er each.

There’s an element of tribalism, but that’s accounted for by those of us who had STs in league 1. As the footy improves, so will attendance figures. Some of the football we played in the relegation season you couldn’t pay me to watch.

Their catchment area is much bigger than ours, that's not an excuse, its a fact.
