Sunderland vs boro 22 Jan 23

And the irony is that Cleveland relates to Yorkshire .
'Land of Cliffs' - Boulby etc.

Isn't there a North and South Cleveland?

'Just an oddity aside, I'm pretty sure the old county boundaries weren't necessarily defined by rivers and a part of Stockton, just over the river, was actually within the old Yorkshire county boundary.

Last 20 home games cup and league we are
W 9
D 4
L 7
Defeats being the 15 and 19 and moyes seasons , a spawny Noel whelan one, a league cup spawny one, the Emerson thunderbolt plus that pollock one
So two in Boro promotion years, 3 in our relegation years plus a couple of jammy ones.
Although the stats look bad , when we are even on the pitch we tend to win at home , lose away
It’s about time we got a good result against them, but both teams do look very evenly matched this season.

For those of us based in the Tees area , it is a very important game, less so for anyone North of Hartlepool. That is simply because we are outnumbered in many areas of Teesside ( not Redcar, Normanby ) and have to put up with the piss taking when we get beat.

If we beat them I will be driving in to work through Eston, Thorntree, Cargo Fleet with my Sunderland flag flying out of the window. If we get beat I will be gutted for a week , as I will have to hear all about it.
It matters to me.

As for the Pools saving us thanks very much, I was there that night very pleasant evening.

So was I.

I used to watch Hartlepool back then when we didn't have a match or were away (I was too young then to go to away matches). Pretty sure Hartlepool played Cardiff in the earlier match and was either 1-1 or 0-0. 'Hung around for the Middlesbrough match.

The bit of Stockton borough south of the river wasn't always part of Stockton. the river used to separate Yorkshire and Durham but they stuck the stuff south of the river onto Stockton to even up the three Teesside borough's populations up somewhat.

so you recon there are more Sunderland fan than boro in Redcar and Normanby.

I have wondered when driving north on the A19 it's signposted Stockton before you get to Middlesbrough or even cross the Tees.

The Boro support in those two areas is diluted by Leeds, Man Utd and Liverpool. Just go in the Cleveland Bay or Turners when Liverpool are on, or the Pov or Stap when Leeds are on.

I'm talking about North of the River Tees. There was a small part of Stockton North of the river which was in the old Yorkshire county boundary.

There is a large Liverpool contingent on Teesside and I don’t get it.

People in there 50s were teenagers when Boro went through their very bad patch 1978 to 1987 . You have to remember Boro were down to gates of 3,000 during that time period , so the people growing up latched on to other teams as a lot of fans in the area had actually given up on Middlesbrough.

I’m too young for any of that, seen local people get kicked out of the riverside for being Liverpool fans it’s mad.

Don't get where you mean.
As far as I'm aware, the Tees was always the Durham/Yorkshire border.
Stockton, Billingham being in Durham, and Thornaby, Middlesbrough, Yarm in the North Riding.
I don't know any part of Stockton (North of the river) that was part of Yorkshire.
Only time I know the boundary to 'change' was when the Tees was redirected, putting the area where Teesside Park is now into Yorkshire.
It was North of the river before that.
Even our message board is superior, hence why you can’t get you arse off it….
Oh dear.
The bitterness has no bounds.
Fancy stooping to the 'Our message board's better than yours" patter to desperately prove a point.
'Your' club was successful in the distant past, when there wasn't a great deal of competition.
Over the (at least) last 60 years, both Boro and Sunderland have had very similar fortunes - spells in and out of the top flight and a cup win.
You are not superior to us, we are not superior to you.
Sunderland and Middlesbrough are just two clubs from working class areas with local people who support their respective clubs.
You have a bigger ground (and more supporters) than us , oh and a busier message board.
So what
Owld past it fannies talking about the hoolie days ffs.
Ridiculous isn't it.
'My gang was bigger than your gang".
I grew up going to football in the 1970's, and the hoolie days were pathetic.
Spoilt football for a lot of people

You're broadly right, but it wasn't uniform across the River Tees. There was a small part of Stockton, North of the river, that was within the Yorkshire county boundary.
I reckon you're mistaken mate.
I grew up in Stockton and as far as I know, no part of it was ever part of Yorkshire.
I stand to be corrected, but surely it couldn't be, seeing as Stockton was 'governed' by Durham County.

Don't mind Boro that much, I have found the majority of their fans who I've met (worked in Thornaby for a few years - ages back - and there were a fair share of them when I worked in Darlington too) canny enough and they don't have any of the mag type delusion.

They definitely do seem to attach more meaning to this game than we do, but while we have a derby which obviously means so much more to us, I've always called the Boro game a derby too.

One thing I would say is, that when growing up, I always thought their fans were not as fanatical as SAFC or NUFC, not only numbers (obviously) but also in terms of atmosphere created/passion etc. But, to be fair - Boro seem to have got their act together on that front and they travel really well away from home these days, and they're capable of making a right racket at their ground too.

Should be a good game, both sides are flying. We owe them one like.

No more massive than any other home game against another mid-table Championship team to me, all Middlesbrough is to me is a conveniently close away game and nothing more.
