Gareth Southgate did say in a press conference before they played friendlies at Boro they would have played at Newcastle if full crowds had been allowed

It remained full until things on the pitch started going wrong. We can fill current ground and likely could go higher, but would need to be better on pitch. Would west ham, chelsea or even man united get full ground in lower league

I think it is to do with sightlines with the existing roof profile. People at the back wouldnt be able to see the far end of the pitch if they just extended the rear rows around from the Premier Concourse.

We were pretty much sold out mate
It only cost £7m to add 7k seats. I don't think it was too much of a risk.
Much easier for us to extend than it is for you lads with SJP.

We sold out after the extension. The problem was the 19 point season..... then the 15 point season. Can't underestimate how much of an effect that had on us. Team does well we'll regularly sell it out again.

Possibly, I hadn't heard that one but having been up there towards the back a few times I assumed it was to do with sightlines.
