Sunderland will face Saudi Arabian opposition Al Shabab in Friendly (poll in Parsnip)

Is the club affiliated with the state in any way other than geography? If not then I don’t really see the problem, you can’t judge an entire nation by the state of its rulers.

It would be like saying we won’t play LA Galaxy in a friendly because the Supreme Court overturned abortion rights.

I do agree we could have side-stepped the issue by going to Spain and playing Malaga like.

their main supporter and stadium named after him has plenty of blood on his hands

Best get rid of those "No blood on hour hands" stickers then
Well, it’s hardly the same as clamoring to be owned by the Saudi State is it?

The club have taken a decision to play a friendly game, doesn’t really impact our supporters stance at all.

Incredible this gets signed off really with how much the club claims to care about the fanbase these days and 'local sunderland fan' Davison looking into things as usual.
Can't believe that he's still in a job here. How many fuck-ups has he overseen now?

Pretty much this

I haven't looked into the details of this club and what their ties are to the Saudi state. Obviously it doesn't even compare to the situation at Newcastle and any Newcastle fans piling in on this announcement are just exposing the hypocrisy of their own situation

HOWEVER - It is a ridiculous PR own goal and so easily avoidable. We could have set up a friendly with a club from almost any other country in the world given the current publicity around getting in bed with teams/regimes from the Middle East.

Loving that our fans are kicking off. Sets us apart from that lot.

They won't pile in as our fans are unhappy with it

There's a seven page thread on it already God knows how big it'll end up. Local sports journalists trawl message boards like this when there's no real news to report on so no doubt the debate about whether it should or shouldn't happen will end up in the chronic.

It's a game that will raise awareness of a Saudi team and it will give them credibility by playing an English championship club. No way should it go ahead

It's different to them lot up the road but morally it's still wrong
