Just been asked this in the office (Newcastle based)

I’d dance around in front of St James’ with a gravy stained ghutrah on my heed no bother for £1million.

I'm conflicted here, the money would be nice a d I could probably tolerate going to the games just about but I've worked hard to lose weight which I don't want to put on and I like having a wash. Some things I just don't think I could give up.

Three phrases to become a mag

“I used to have a season ticket but not anymore”

“I’ve never ever supported Sunderland before 1992. Always been a Penshaw mag. Always will be”

“Wa need someone like da awab man what’s rown down at man shitty”

You forgot 'I was born and bred in Sunderland, into a Sunderland supporting family' in Phase 1 (which is the case with about 75% of Washington/Durham mags), otherwise more or less spot on.

How can you support a team for money ? Yeah you could attend games and do a decent acting job , but you could never truly support another team .
For ten million I’d probably get Almiron’s face tattooed across my back .
I mean technically could could donate 1p of that million and you’re then supporting them financially. They didn’t specify how you need to support them.

I’d still want to see if there’s any way to offer a decimal of that penny though.

I'd stop supporting Sunderland, pretend that deep down football was still the same now we're buying success at the hands of a murderous regime, and unironically brag about how roads are better in Newcastle, for £1m absolutely.

What does that mean though? I'd go to their matches for £1m. Maybe even wear a top. But you can't just make yourself care about them, or stop caring about us.

I watch a couple of American sports and have picked some teams to follow just to make it more interesting. But I'm not really that arsed if they win or lose - there's no emotional connection.
That is the key thing. Like the majority on here, Sunderland is my first love. I can think of being brought up on stories about Sunderland (my parents went in 1973, my grandad saw a few of the greats play like Shackleton), I remember my first game going on an evening match, which always felt special. I remember the 3rd division season with Gates and Gabbiadini. No matter how frustrated or detatched I get about certain eras, like Moyes onwards or our current (mild by comparison) troubles, I love Sunderland and always will. We win and I'm on a high, we get beat and I hurt. I can usually tell you where we are in the league table, what our fixtures are, and I love reading about our history.

I started trying to pick up York City as a second team when I lived in York and went to a few of their games, but I was a spectator. I'd walk away thinking 'decent win' or 'oh I watched a defeat, now what is for tea'. I'd barely give them a second thought. I'm the same with international football. It is there to be watched, same as I watched each Harry Potter film with the kids. I don't love York, don't love England and don't love Harry, Dumbledore etc.

For an amount of money, I could wear a mag top, cover it in gravy for authenticity, leave it in the dog bed for a while and never wash it to get that genuine smell. I could go to their games and learn a song or two. Would I ever love them like Sunderland, no? Would I be sitting at the ground, checking our result on my phone? Yes. Would I be biting my tongue when we next play them if we scored? Yes. Would I jump with passionate jubilation if they score against us? Absolutely not. No amount of money can buy an emotion.

I guess if you are a plastic fan who has a faded Man U tattoo on one arm, a Chelsea on the other, both covered up by your Man City top, then you probably can. But if you really love and support one club, you can never love another for money.

Bit of a daft question, you can’t force yourself to care about something you don’t care about.

What would be the acceptance criteria? Attend 85% of home matches in a season? Wear a gravy stained barcode shirt? Listen to Sam Fender?
This, I support the mags now give me my million. Just say you're going to Sunderland games as a neutral.
