Mimi from LOW has passed away
That's awful news.
So, aside from Ride's 4 EPs for the first time in ages, and the 5 new Sault albums this has been my weekend listening:
Daniel Avery: very, very good. Electronica, some vocals, there's a warmth here.
Decius: quite, er, banging.Enjoyable, not too sophisticated.
Darren Hayman: a bit dull and, at 24 songs, overly long. I usually like his albums.
Horse Lords: wibbly, instrumental kind of post-rockish stuff. Pretty good.
Yonatan Gat: four fairly long guitar based tracks, largely instrumental. I like this.
Trampled By Turtles: bluegrass-ish Americana. Good. They've been doing this for a good while.
Rayland Baxter: this is very good. Americana, a bit proggy, a bit bluesy at times.
First Aid Kit: more upbeat than their last album. Very good songs, same vibe as usual, great harmonies.
Big Joanie: terrific stuff. Quality alt-rock songs. They're very, very good.
Special Interest: dance punk type stuff. Has a great pace and vibe to it.
Old Fire: sort of ambient Americana. Has some guest vocals (Bill Callahan pops up). Very engaging.
PJ Harvey: 50 odd tracks is a lot to take in. Some of them you'll know, some maybe not.
Plastic Mermaids: I think this came out last week. They're one of a number of bands from the Isle of Wight currently making waves. Something of a cross between Mercury Rev and Hot Chip. Really good.
Phoenix: it's Phoenix, they're very good. Sophisticated French pop, basically.
Album of the week: Big Joanie, although Daniel Avery, Rayland Baxter and Plastic Mermaids come close.
