I am sure that the club intended the North stand to be the home end, I sat there for the first 17 seasons waiting for it to happen. So we moved to the South stand. Now people are wanting us evicted. Ffs.

Everton under Di Canio. The Chelsea Defoe game.

Even Portsmouth playoff game with less than half the ground filled were some of the best atmospheres.

What happens on the pitch (and the importance of the game) has always affected the atmosphere.

Sheff Utd in the play offs, 1st derby v the Mags at the SoL, the 2-1 Richardson free kick game, absolutely unreal atmospheres with the away fans in the South Stand. Even when we beat the mags 3-0 here it didn't come close to reaching those heights once they'd been moved upstairs.

Aye, one a game v the mags we were underdogs for after not beating them for nearly 10 years (and the first home win against them in nearly 30? And mags games always have a good atmosphere regardless (unless we are getting battered).

And a playoff semi for the the prem after we were losing from the home leg and got a pretty early goal to get back in it.

Are you saying they weren't important games?

The problem with being shit for the best part of a decade is that the relentless batterings at home and subsequent freefall to oblivion tend to dampen atmosphere a bit.

The best atmospheres we've had at the SoL have been when the away fans have been in the South Stand.

Go on try to argue otherwise.
 
I remember that West Ham cup game when they had the whole south stand.

And we lost - that wasn’t a lot of fun seeing them going mental

Best atmospheres in the stadium have been when we were doing decent things on the pitch.

Season we got relegated with Davis in goal and the lowest points total in history the atmosphere was abysmal and the away fans were in the south stand. There's a theme occurring here.

So you don't agree that the best atmospheres we've had have been when the away fans have been in the South Stand? A yes or no answer would have done.

If anything the improvements to what the South Stand does with the flags etc and the filling of the bowl before PC has led to a consistently good atmosphere for ever game before and during.
Sheff We’d last season was a good atmosphere but I’ve no doubt it would have been better still if their fans had been in bottom tier.
Generally though the atmosphere is better because there is no gaps and we don’t need opposition fans to make a racket ... see Wembley and Wycombe!

The best atmospheres have come when we have something to cheer about such as the mags game, the Sheff Utd game, the Chelsea game and the Everton one although even with the Everton and Chelsea one's they weren't exactly cheerful times as a club.

I think the worst atmospheres have been the record low point season and the decade long slide to oblivion.

Given theres examples of both good atmospheres with away fans in North and South as well as poisonous ones with fans in the north and the south I'm going to say I think the atmosphere hinges on what is happening on the pitch/at the club rather than where people's arses are.

Fwiw i don't really care where the away fans are as long as they are stopped from throwing things down onto us (I sit in the north) sooner rather than later (its already late) and it makes sense. I do however think it's absolute nonsense to compare atmospheres with good times in the prem v atmospheres of bad times in the championship and league 1, mind.

I'm certainly not convinced the atmosphere will be fantastic if we move the away fans next week to the south and get walloped 4-0 off Cardiff for example if that is what you are suggesting.

Fair points and I agree.

Plus derby games are always going to have a good atmosphere.

That 5.15pm game against the mags - hells teeth!!! I think Super Kev mentioned it in his autobiography. Bobby Robson said it was the loudest crowd he had heard in all his time in football.

It was never really an issue for us in the Premier league, remember Man United throwing the smoke bomb down in the semi final but thats about it.


Its these shit clubs bringing their biggest away attendance of the season on their big day out

Post of mine from 2011: Wolves Fans

You've been one of the few places I've ever been to where as an away fan I've felt completely dominated by a wall of sound from the home fans (and I'd say you're louder than Old Trafford was even if there's more 'fans' there). But after we scored the third we never heard the Sunderland fans again.

I moved up to the upper part of the stand (where it wasn't raining :lol: ) in the second half and I suppose having the roof on us at that point made it louder where we were stood, but honestly couldn't hear a word from you lot after the 3rd goal if you did sing, because we were making that much noise.

Moving up to the top of the stand probably didn't help it spread around the ground mind.

tl;dr, when away fans had the South stand, the SWC seemed to be the most vociferous part and was one of the few places I felt drowned out as an away fan, if home fans are singing.

These days I'm a season ticket holder in the South East Corner (long story, posted elsewhere) and if the South Stand is quiet, you can hear the away fans loud and clear, but for some reason it just doesn't travel well. SJP is similar, can't hear a word from the home fans due to placement.

Do the mags not have the same issues with people chucking stuff off the top deck. I've never heard it mentioned?
