Tony Mowbray Rumour

Left Blackburn after 5 years and ended up 8th last season-that will do for me.
He might look like a human gargoyle but he plays attacking football and big on youth development.
The lads can open beer bottles on both his nose & his chin, so that's very much a point in his favour. Admittedly they can't use his head as a mirror as effectively as they could with Neil, so it's touch & go....

Its nailed on.
We could do much, much worse and indeed have done.
See Johnson, Grayson, Parkinson, Coleman .... all much worse
Actually, Mowbray would seem to a consistent appointment along the Grayson, Coleman, Parkinson, Johnson continuum, with Ross and Neil standing outside of it.

Mowbray is just another dull, boring and unimaginative appointment, which smacks of desperation and indicates a preparedness to accept second best.

Mowbray is going to have to succeed and achieve in order to win the fans round, including me. I’m glad I’m now on a ‘pay as you go’ basis.

The one saving grace is that, if the news of the French lad proves to be true and the Dutch lad from Brighton eventually arrives, Mowbray’s influence over transfers is likely to be minimised.

Can’t say I’m over enthusiastic but all we can do, as always, is get behind him.
Lots didn’t want Neil, if he can turn around peoples opinion like Neil did, he will have done okay.

We can only hope he does

Bog standard Championship manager but so was Alex Neil. People like him get jobs because they're steady, probably won't do anything exciting but his record suggests he'll keep us up. Shows the lack of ambition from the club if this is true.
Depends on what the ambition (business plan) is I assume? If ambition this season is consolidation in this division, then a solid bog standard manager is what we want, if the ambition is top two then he’s not the man I suppose.

I also think safc ambition is more realistic than ours as supporters cos the business will know our resources and capacity and position re FFP, and they will know exactly what type of manager fits their business plan.

I will say this about Tony Mowbray:
  • He was a very steady and committed footballer
  • He is undoubtedly a gentleman and respectful of clubs and their fans
  • He was extraordinarily dignified and had all of our sympathies when he lost his first wife
  • He is committed to playing fluid, attacking football
  • He has a decent record at this level
  • He likes to play and develop young players
  • He has experienced promotions and relegations
  • He knows the North East well…. This is a big issue with appointing managers here
  • He should be able to advise our central defenders on how to position and defend
  • He won’t be intimidated by our supporters having managed Celtic, Middlesbrough, West Brom and Blackburn.
  • Regardless what we like to think, we are a club in transition and he is still young enough to have that desire to have success

Too sensible for this thread!

Will get behind the bloke 100%. I was dead against the appointment when I first heard about it but I’ve been doing a bit reading and there’s a lot of positives about him.

He brought through Harvey Elliott at Blackburn and is highly regarded for working with younger players.

Likes to play football on the deck which will suit our current squad and had Blackburn finish 8th last season.

Just look at his time at Blackburn.
First full season - Promoted to the Championship
Second season - 15th
Third - 11th
Fourth - 15th
Last - 8th

Win percentage - 40%

Alex Neil at Preston
First season - 7th
Second - 14th
Third - 9th

Win percentage - 38%

Not much difference.
