As I've posted before they had a 7k crowd while in the 1st division, the lowest top flight attendance of the entire 70's only beaten when Wimbledon were in the top division.

Not sure it was topflight?

Last game of 1978/79 season they had 7,134.

We played Cardiff the week before (same division) and had 36,526. We finished 4th, they finished 8th.

Best fans in the world apparently caveated by being in Europe, breaking transfer records of course.

Their top flight low was against Norwich, the season before.

We had over 14k in league below v Notts County

Just before 1st Thatcher government so times would have been hard on Tyneside/Wearside.

Who is he, has anyone ever heard of him before?
Nope. Then again I don't watch any football outside of the Premier League.
All I know about the lad is what I heard on the Guardian podcast and they reckon he is very good. We will see. For that money he should be!
Got to worry that we were after others then, out of the blue, we throw 60M on this lad. Appreciate we may have managed to keep long term pursuit quiet but, given how almost everything is reported these days, I highly doubt it. 60M is a hell of a lot of money for any team not amongst the 'top table'.

"For that money"?

Using the football inflation calculator Luque : 20m EUR in 2005 equates to 67.5m EUR in today's terms.

That spectacularly low crowd took place on the final day of the Second Division season 1978-79.
For some historical perpective, crowds were down across the football leagues. The average crowd in the First Division was 23.500 (Chelsea and Bolton) while Newcastle averaged 20,500. I believe they were averaging 26,500 until two things happened: a fans' boycott and legal action taken by them against some directors and, second, resuots fell off a cliff.
Furthermore, that Wrexham game took place on a day of awful weather and rumour spread that the game had been called off.
All in all, that match is one of the least typical you could have chosen in the history of NUFC.
