It's because of the commission rate on card transactions, and there's usually a fixed charge for hiring the terminal. Below a certain level it's not cost-effective. Banks get you all ways.

Yep our cost for cash banking is about £40 a week all in. Turnover far lower than SAFC but that's us banking each week the equivalent of SAFC selling 250ish match day tickets. We still have the cash collection and verifying as the club would and it's still very cost effective.
Don't believe the club narrative. They simply can't be arsed.

Every business has its own deal with the card companies. Smaller companies (like pubs) get poorer deals. Rates are also lower for online transactions than for terminal ones. The Harbour View is probably paying 3-4% on its terminal, plus whatever the monthly hire is. iZetlle could be a better option for them; the rates are lower. A business like SAFC with a preponderance of online transactions could be playing 0.75-1%.

We have a number of outlets, one of which has a turnover of nearing 50% of SAFC.
Happy to accept cash.
The club is adopting a cop out position on this.

I’ve been to a funeral today. At the wake I was sat with about eight lads who are basically the same as me. Getting on, supporters all of our lives, no longer season tkt holders.
All of us had a story to tell about how difficult it is to buy tkts for a game.
All of us asked the question… Why can’t you ring up, book your tkts, pay over the phone and have your tkts arrive through your letterbox two or three days later.
Eight of us, in our sixties, been going over fifty years and all of us finding problems with the current set up.
None of us live in Sunderland, in fact all,of us from BW Hartlepool so popping into the ticket office isn’t that easy.
All of us had a story to tell about how difficult it is to buy tkts for a game.

Just tried it and it's failing for all clubs, so it's a Ticketmaster update rather than anything to do with SAFC.We don’t know. Could be, but then again it could be TM upgrading, or increasing their security to close off access to their systems.
Not sure if any other clubs who use TM can still be accessed by the API or not. Perhaps that’s a test. But really, not sure it is worth it. Bob is going to count them all manually anyway, so we’re sorted.
Not convinced I'll get around this update but I'll do some testing.

The figures I'm quoting for the club are realistic, based on what I'm paying in respect of online and in-person transactions using a combination of Stripe, Paypal and iZettle. We're paying between .75% and 2% dependent on who it's with and what card the buyer is using.

Mine are actuals, one based on a turnover of circa £1.5 million with about £10k a month cash bankings. The other is exactly the same rates based on a turnover of circa 50% of SAFC.
I'll find out the card charge actuals tomorrow.
Both places accept cash without a problem.
The problem is with SAFC refusing to accept cash. You seem overly defensive of the club in this matter.

Possibly because of where I am. About half the businesses near me are card only, and I see very few cash users in the others. In other words, I'm not seeing it as a problem. I don't see a demographic problem either. Our concert-going demographic isn't exactly young; we've had no problems with ticket selling or complaints about no handling cash, and preferably not cheques.

And I respect that position. Despite what some of the SMB northern glitterati would have you believe there's still a fair bit of cash circulating here. Which is why the vast majority of businesses accept it. SAFC should be embracing it, not putting barriers Infront of our supporters attending our matches.
I bought two tickets from the Tyne Theatre last month at the box office paying cash.

Here's one about demographics in Sunderland. Relates to Lidl on Durham Road (on the site of Prospect pub) 3.5 miles from the Stadium (288 miles from Bristol).
I was in there on Monday. Finished my shop and headed for the self service tills. There was a queue of 2. As I got closer it became apparent that the queue was actually for the cash tills. There were 3 cash tills being used and a queue of 2 waiting their turn. Meanwhile none of the Card Only tills were in use. I do most of my food shopping in there and 9 out of 10 times I go in there more people are using the Cash tills than are using the Card tills.
That is Wearside demographics which is relevant to what we are discussing. The demographics in Bristol and its hinterland don't matter a jot in relation to how people buy SAFC tickets.
2 things regarding the Lidl experience.
A) There are a sizable number of people on Wearside that prefer to (or have to) use cash.
B) Lidl are quite happy to have half their unmanned tills take cash. Because if they didn't then know they would lose custom.

Surely if you want to go though you just buy a ticket. The PC isn't opening for this one. The advance ticket sales aren't strong enough. Anyone holding on will just end up getting a worse seat than they could have in the lower bowl.

Great point mate we are in the same boat me and few of my mates decided to go the QPR game and with me being the whippernapper it was decided that this 58 year old was I C Tickets . What a nightmare all of us live in east durham and have been going to the match home and away since the 70s . None of us have ever had season tickets . We go when we all fancy a good day out or the lads are doing well . So until they make it easier we will be stopping in the club to watch it .
