No problem mate..I always treat it as a debate, not an argument.....It comes back too many times to bite you on the ar@e being a sheffield football fan..having said that...I watched the game last night and thought it was a cracking match up to the sending off, two teams really going for it..I was a red card though...one seconds lapse of concentration
It felt like a derby in terms of my heart rate haha its early in the season but I know thst was the type of game we lose so it was a big relief at full time,I can't see Blackburn feeling like that I think its mainly ciz there's a lot of sunlun boro and toon fans round here it felt a bit more mate

It was great game.

Most games I watch I find myself wondering off and doing summat else but lasts game was proper.

I hope Darren Moore was watching and learning how to play with 10 men!!

The Wednesday played at Bramall lane before United did mate...moved to olive grove about half a mile from bramall lane, argued with the council , then moved to hillsborough

its nowt special mate..like the demographics of Sheffield is nowt special as regards football fans, theres no "Class" difference..never has been
actually mate..If I was more "affluent"..I would probably be able to afford to live in north Yorkshire :);)

Never knew that, and why I love this place as would never have thought of looking that up.

Still find it interesting that Sheffield as two clubs with good history, also that fact that United are called just that, as that would usually indicate that clubs have merged together.

I've got a loaded firestick and can watch any team I wants ifollow channel I was gonna watch the Peterborough match but no commentary so couldn't be bothered abd stuck sky sports news on it doesn't mean I'm obsessed or whatever I'm just a footie mad bloke who likes a bet lol

Anyone that I knew that supported either when I was down there for uni was generally quite grounded.

Always felt like you saw more Man United shirts in town than either of their lot, can remember getting the train back to Sheff from Old Trafford when we won 1-0 down there a few months after the League Cup semi in 2014 and the train was rammed full of people with Man United colours on.

I can't help but like both clubs, I've never thought either as arrogant. I've found fans from clubs like Bolton and Wigan to be much much worse amazingly.
Most arrogant ive met are Arsenal...do my f.ookin' nut in
Met one in Minorca in 1994...just after they had beat us in both cup finals in '93..Theres me in me Wednesday shirt at a bar, this f.ooker..wearing a sodding suit , sidles over,
"We beat you in both cup finals"
"Yea I know was there"
"I went to both games"
"There were 3 mate"
"No we beat you in both finals"
"Yea..I know mate"

a total know nowt..do you know he went on to say he thought the pitch helped them win cos Highbury was only 200 yds in length and Hillsborough was 400 yds!!!
I asked him if f.ookin' Kip kano played for them...Then the wife said we had to go

I think The blades were the first club called "United"..
look up charles clegg"..He formed Sheffield United...He was...chairman of Sheffield Wednesday..The f.ookin' idiot!!!

To be fair I have never seen a difference between both sets of fans.
Both always used to take a decent following away from home when down in the lower leagues, everyone’s big game where Towns would turn out for the big occasion including our lot.

Been to Bramall Lane loads of times, my youngest loves the ground.
Wednesday have always taken way more to Sunderland than Blades.
Even when away travel wasn't anything like it is now (late 60s,early 70s), they still brought hundreds up. One season we played them in the league and the following week iirc in the cup. Had around 1000 for the league game and double that for the cup. They also tried to get in to the FE in cup game and were chased back down to the RE.
Don't even think Blades sold full allocation for PO SF 98 !!

Always had more affection to Sheff Utd mostly because of the red and white colours, but I know some top people who are Wednesday fans.

Ive got a Blades mate from South Kirkby. One of them villages near the chimneys between the A1 and M1. He was there last night.

Closest town is Barnsley, near Donny too. Its in West Yorks, full of Leeds fans but buses go to Wednesday and Blades, sounds a right mixed Up place.
He says his dad and brother are Wednesday but his uncle took him to United.

I remember a few years back when there was riots in the UK, it started in London, think it was summat to do with that Mark Duggan shooting. Every major city In the UK had riots apart from Cardiff and Sheffield. Made me quite proud.
rumour has it, that a few lads from London came up to a pub that was on the Park Hill flats, one of them stood up to sorta start a speech to incite a riot...They got a tw*tting offa the locals who said..."We've enough problems up here already soft lad...THWACK!!!!

Can anybody, perhaps one of our resident Owls or Blades, give an overview of their rivalry?

Are the historic differences social, economic, geographic within Sheffield or something else?

Are there stereotypes of the fans? What lines do the break along?

In the city of Sheffield the support is surprisingly 50/50.This is because neither Sheffield team has been able to dominate for too long, it's always alternated in 10 to 15 year cycles.
Whereas in South Yorkshire Wednesday are traditionally seen as more glamorous so have more support in Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham etc resulting in them being more disliked by Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster fans. Both have a similar hardcore support but Sheff Wednesday have always had more woodwork supporters who only turn up for the big matches.

There's a slight pattern of more SW fans near their stadium in the north of Sheffield, where SU have more fans in South Sheffield but both fans are very mixed everywhere in Sheffield. You often find families, brother/ sister, husbands/ wives supporting Utd with the other supporting Wednesday.
Basically everyone seem to have family or friends who support United or Wednesday.

So derby matches are very passionate, almost too tense, sadly there's plenty of intimidation towards away fans wearing shirts.
Also the records of both teams are very similar. United have won slightly more in head to heads but I believe there's only about 3 wins in it.
Also seasons spent in the top flight, 2nd tier and 3rd tier are again surprisingly similar, Wednesday slightly edge it, so there's always local bragging rights at stake.

Regards stereotypes attitudes are often based on history.

Sheff Wed were challenging near the top of the table (div 1) in the early 60's, mid 80's and early 90's.
Therefore many Wednesday fans (a bit like Forest this season) have an inner confidence that promotion back to the PL is only a matter of time
and when they get their they'll expect to spend big and challenge in the top 10.

So SW fans are traditionally more confident, verging on arrogant. Due to not being in the PL for 22 years their (understandably) constantly talk about their fantastic early 90's team
and tell each other how big (massive) they are and often mock other clubs support/ stadia/ history etc.
Wednesday have a more loyal accepting fanbase, almost like a happy clapper cult and have historically always had an excellent away support.

United fans are traditionally more angry/ bitter, very passionate but have more of an underdog syndrome with chips on their shoulders.
However Sheff United are more down to earth and able to take the Micky out of their own club.
Whereas Wednesday fans take their clubs image very very seriously.

Sheff Utd have a history of doing well, regularly involved in promotions battles, have fairly good cup runs but we always fail at the final hurdle.
We haven't won anything since 1925 and not even been in a cup final since 1936, so it's almost written in our DNA that we'll see glorious failure.
In the 70's some of the old'uns used to the say to me "Sheffield United, always the bridesmaid never the bride"...kind of sums it up.
United fans are more fickle, great support when doing well but it can drop off (especially away) when struggling or lacking ambition.

Another difference is that some United fans seem more bothered about seeing SW lose than see their own team win.
Sheff United fans seem to see the Sheffield Derby as the more important where as Sheff Wed fans see the bigger picture of trying to get back in the PL and compete for honours.

One of the issues that causes both Sheffield teams to struggle and that there's a lot of infighting with both fanbases try to sabotage the efforts of both clubs.
So you find Sheff Wed fans pretending to be Sheff Utd's fan ringing up radio station asking for fans to stay away and hoping the manager to be sacked and vice versa.
Also on forums and social media you see much more negative stuff than positive. Again fans pretend they support their club but constantly slagging them off.

So there's plenty of social media negatively around both clubs trying to predict eternal failure.
In fact living in the past, being small minded and negativity all seem to be traditional Sheffield traits.
