Wednesday v United

I lived near Hillsborough for a number of years from the early 90's , from what I saw there was little rhyme or reason to who you supported ,I knew brothers and fathers/uncles who supported one or the other , it's not necessarily a family or a geographic thing either as I know Wednesday fans from South of the City centre and Blades from North Sheffield also

Can agree with that...South Sheffield had huge estates built to the South East that people all over the city moved to so no surprise supporters of both live there. I knew Blades from Ecclesfield, Penistone, Stocksbridge and Hillsborough, all of which would be seen as Wednesday territory. Places like Handsworth, Aston and Woodseats are much more red than blue.

Well since you asked....

Sheffield people are generally great and it's a good city to live in

Both teams have seen good and bad times over the last 40 years and I followed the Blades down to Division 4 and back up to the Premier and back to League 1.

I didn't live in South Yorkshire for more than a couple of years but always found Wednesday had a lot of arrogant, up themselves fans, with lots of plastics, who never attended games, bragging about their players, crowds etc ""We're gonna" was a favourite phrase.

The Blades have a large fan base from some rough areas of Sheffield like Manor, Park Hill etc but also support from the leafy suburbs of the South and West of Sheffield.

Wednesday fans always boasted about Hillsborough hosting big games whilst it decayed, and whilst it's big the ends behind the goals have far too many pillars blocking views. United have improved Bramall Lane a lot though the cheapskate conversion of the Kop into a seated stand, left it with the same problem as Hillsborough ie seats with no view.

I still watch the Blades on tv but haven't been to a live game (bar a couple v Sunderland) for about 10 years.

Have to say @wednesday1957 and @Visiting owl disprove my theory about Wednesday fans being full of emselves

@Parsoncross could give you a view
Sheffield football demographics?....Nah...Its all over the place..Park hill flats, plenty of mates on there in the 70's, Wednesday fans, coaches from Wybourn Owls, blades coach from Deepcar, blades fans in Oughtibridge, Stocksbridge.
I know blades fans like to think some owls fans are sorta upper class for some reason, i can tell you what half of that is..sheffield semi 93 when "Dave "harry" Basset said he walked into wembley chatting with trevor Francis and folk thought he was "Trevors butler" lol.
My mum was born on John st..directly behind the Kop at the lane...family of 7 brothers 2 sisters..All Wednesday except for me Uncle Vin..Me grandad wanted to send him to a home.
my first ever game was at bramall lane, Uncle Vin took me, he was tight as f.ook and never even bought me a pie or a drink, early 60's,
Other Uncles found out, and had a right go at me Mum, following week, I was allowed to stay up and go to Hillsborough for a night game, Uncles picked me up..new Wednesday scarf, orange juice and crisps sat outside a pub, walk up Penistone rd, floodlights shining in the distance, got bought one o them little "Owl"
badges..me sorted...The devious f.ookers.... and subjected to years of bloody misery.
Theres no difference,
Blades have some reight tw*ts...Wednesday do...Sunderland do
Best man at my Wedding was a Blade, played cricket with him for years.
Sheffield is a strange city, you can drive in one side and think its beautiful..carry on heading east and think its an inch offa the bronx
BUT
The folk are mainly friendly, and these folk support both sides, and these folk are passionate about football, so yer gonna get the odd spat...
I always hark back to one particular Sheffield derby,at Hillsborough, 2 owls lads had been killed on the way back from a game at Coventry on the motorway the week before..pre match there was a one minutes silence, which I didn't think was a good idea..during it ..On The leppings Lane Blades fans held a banner up that said R.I.P..with both their names on, and stood in an impeccable one minutes silence...Ive absolute respect for them, can't abide their f.ookin' team , but most of the Blades I know are class

Yes Wednesday fans are very arrogant you only need to scroll porktalk to see they all think they are gonna piss the league abd apparently everyone wants them back in them prem blades are more happy as long as the lads fight for the shirt if we lose we lose Wednesday fans expect them to tonk everyone 5 nil
Also where I grew up was a mixture of Blades abd owls one of the owls got married 2 years ago got married and barred any Blades from attending proper prick so obviously he's not a mate anymore also they sing if you don't bounce your a blade so we started singing we're all f***ing wankers at the lane we can take the piss outta ourselves they like to banter but when you give it back they ignore you or start effing and jeffing proper sensitive lot

Sheffield identical to Rome as built on 7 hills?
One for the football purists :)

Met a Sheffield lass on my first ever lads holiday abroad, she was a Blade.

so you know the "One" arrogant Owls fan?
absolute bllx mate, you think theres such a diversity in one City?
I suggest you actually "read" Owlstalk, all you will find is mainly black humour and tat....any forum that has a topic called
""whats your favourite bus stop"
Has to be looked at with a rather jaundiced eye mate

To be fair I have never seen a difference between both sets of fans.
Both always used to take a decent following away from home when down in the lower leagues, everyone’s big game where Towns would turn out for the big occasion including our lot.

Been to Bramall Lane loads of times, my youngest loves the ground.

I've met a know more than one owl I go on owlstalk reading I've never signed up and it's all arrogance the odd one or 2 posters seem oreyt but it's the Wednesday massive innit, saying the women's euros only picked Bramall Lane coz they didn't want to use Hillsborough coz it's to big and would have loads of empty seats 😂 read the thread from Danielle she says Hillsborough is to big for you guys most disagreed a few said you need a 25k stadium unless your established in the prem which is true, like wise we've had this discussion and 99% blades know the lane is about right fir us at the minute no need to make it any bigger

you read a Wednesday website??..fookinell
No doubt a 25k stadium would suit us at the minute.....same as an 14k one would have suited you when you were down here in the 90's....times have changed mate
you have "had a discussion" with 99% of blades...f.ookin' big meeting room that mate...glad they could all make it

Can anybody, perhaps one of our resident Owls or Blades, give an overview of their rivalry?

Are the historic differences social, economic, geographic within Sheffield or something else?

Are there stereotypes of the fans? What lines do the break along?

I don’t know why & can’t be arsed to Google it. I always thought that Wednesday we’re the more affluent club of the suburbs of the city.

With Utd being the more working class traditionally, could be way off like and incorrectly associating the colour’s with politics (blue being more conservative & red for the workers & labour)

I Read a Wednesday board like Wednesday fans read ours and like me and you are reading and commenting on a Sunderland board, and I meant 99% of people on our board you know thst your just trying to make it look summat it int,I mean how many Wednesday on here there's at least 3 abd there's at least 2 mackems and wba derby on Wednesdays it's nowt special

The Wednesday played at Bramall lane before United did mate...moved to olive grove about half a mile from bramall lane, argued with the council , then moved to hillsborough

actually mate..If I was more "affluent"..I would probably be able to afford to live in north Yorkshire :);)

Anyway pal there's plenty of blades owls banter groups and thst online let's keep it away from us 2 we both know deep darn there's not much between us and I don't like to gloat to much because I'm old enough and daft enough to know we could switch places in a few years and that's wgst I love,it's not like city and man utd is it where they will probably be in the same division forever we are so close in terms of everything which is great

No problem mate..I always treat it as a debate, not an argument.....It comes back too many times to bite you on the ar@e being a sheffield football fan..having said that...I watched the game last night and thought it was a cracking match up to the sending off, two teams really going for it..I was a red card though...one seconds lapse of concentration

Years ago geographically you could define a blade from an owl but these days blades live up Hillsborough and owls live near the lane, met a few decent owls and my best mates one but they just go on about how they are too big for league one when blades accepted it for 6 years and also a blade will be honest owls have far better away support than us but we have better home support even when in the same division
If you mean vocally, what happened last night? ;)
